I guess it comes to this. If they are to maintain their share price, Apple needs you to continue buying an iPhone and a MacBook (or iMac). Thus they cannot allow the iPad to replace either one of them. And so it is a device between. Its a device lots of people want, but nobody needs. What Apple should have done is to create a device that is spectacularly good at one thingone thing that neither of the other devices does particularly well (like reading!). Instead, they went with the kitchen sink approach, trying to make it passably good at everythingthings that the iPhone and MacBook do just fine.

Well, its just supposed to be a reading device. I think this guy was expecting too much.
Ah, so that explains Vista.
A much better solution would be to simply make the MacBook Air keyboard hinges able to fold completely back against the back of the screen, and then lock in place and shut off any keyboard input. Change the screen to touch sensitive, and you have the best of all worlds - a superlightweight computer that turns into a touch-sensitive tablet.
Hmmm... maybe I should be an inventor.
Nah, I’d just be ignored.
sigh..........now what on earth does that have to do with the topic at hand? Jeez............
As for the piece here, the guy’s right. Neat-o gizmo that didn’t grab me as a “must have”. Typical Apple approach, as well, that he nailed: Introduce a ‘crippled’ product, get the lemmings to buy them by the truckload, then release version 2.0 with the features/functions that version 1.0 should have had all along.....and for far less $$$.
Anyone who buys this version 1.0 is a fool.

Nah, because then who would bring us all those kewl Photoshops? :-)
As for features missing - most of them are tech-media hyped as useful, but perhaps not so useful to the average guy.
Then there is the iPhone OS - here the iPad is only going to largely mirror the current version - what will 4.0 OS bring? Who knows, but what the iPhone does so can the iPad. If multitasking is part of 4.0, there is no way that feature will be available now in the iPad but not the iPhone.
Coincidentally, the iPad will be released just as Apple turns it's focus to the next version of the iPhone. Perhaps the sharp critics should just wait and see what the actual iPad is, and actually test a release version, before getting all lathered up. Just saying.

Ruh roh... you stepped on one of those dread One Issue Freepers! Sort of like a sting ray, but stickier... better put some ice on it pronto!
I thought the Segway was the biggest dissapointment.

A fairly devastating critique. By this author’s account, iPad is an iDud.
Do you do this in every thread in FR that isn’t about politics? You must be very busy.
If you’re not interested in a thread, don’t click on it. Now screw off.

It's not Barack 0bama?
gibtx2,
Apparently you left your computer on and your parrot is posting.
Just wanted you to know.
