misleading...aspirin is ONE NSAID but only one....there's all the ibuprofens under a zillion names and naprosyn, to name the most common.....

and of course NSAIDS can be dangerous.....renal failure for one....( direct correlation with someone taking Lisinopril and naprosyn...aleve....and renal failure) and of course gastric ulcers, etc...

over the counters can be very dangerous.....not only NSAIDS, but also Tylenol.....

I am using it just so. The doctor refers to aspirin and NSAIDs separately. The NSAID Ibuprofen will elevate one’s blood pressure.

Apples and oranges. You are not willingly infected with H1N1; taking aspirin is voluntary.

Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug. Aspirin decreases inflammation, it’s a drug, and it isn’t a steroid.

Have you noticed all the recent ANTI-aspirin information in the press?

But ibuprophen is associated with Stevens Johnson Syndrome, while acetaminophen is associated with kidney failure. And who knows how acetaminophen and ibuprophen impact the liver?

Have you noticed how there recently have been big stories about how it is DANGEROUS for people to be taking a baby aspirin everyday, unless they have already had a heart attack?

What gives??

What is the truth, and how do we discover it?

For instance, how many supplements & vitamins are genuinely SAFE in the amounts most people take them, and who is deciding this?

Does anyone happen to know if taking NAC would prevent the dangerous side effects from either ibuprophen or from acetaminophen?

Thanks.

There was recently an article over somewhere on the BBC website that morphine encourages the massively rapid growth of some cancers.

Sorry, I don't remember the details, but do recall it being mentioned somewhere, can't remember, that this was just terrible to learn as morphine is the main pain killer in terminal cancer.

**For instance, how many supplements & vitamins are genuinely SAFE in the amounts most people take them, and who is deciding this?**

Vitamins and Minerals are PERFECTLY SAFE, BUT ..some COMMON SENSE is Necessary (have to add that for the whiners). Fat soluble vitamins A,D, and E can cause problems taken in LARGE AMOUNTS(like by the HANDFUL).The problem is the “SCUMSUCKERS” like to add HERBAL into the mix.and treat the 3 as 1 item.
Herbal preparations ARE Medicine, as they were the original base of most medications (synthesized so they could be PATENTED).. and the herbals are VERY EFFECTIVE, but they cannot be PATENTED, so PHarma and their Lapdogs at the FDA try to make them Illegal.

Most cancer patients do not suffer extreme pain through the course of their disease, by the time, they need the morphine, it probably does not materially affect their length of life.

Cancer treatment has come a long way in the last twenty years. There are many options for treating the various pains caused by the cancer without resorting to narcotics. At the end, when the whole system is breaking down, morphine, in addition to decreasing the pain, decreases the feeling of suffocation as the body becomes starved for oxygen. Morphine is an old drug but is still the friend of the dying man.

Part of the problem also with Tylenol/aspirin is that people themselves tend to abuse it and not because of any great pain that they’re in (not a pain-management issue) but just ‘Oh, I’ve got a bad headache, if 2 are good, 4 are even better!’ And when the headache isn’t gone in an hour, pop a few more. So many people think OTC = benign and take it at higher dosages than they should, for a longer period than recommended. Dosage instructions are there for a reason, even OTC meds.

And I agree about pain management becoming much better. My coworker’s mom just had two spinal surgeries. She’s had oxycodone, a morphine patch and others, basically whatever she’s needed to get through the recovery period. I’ve known many Hospice patients and the meds prescribed for pain are pretty freely given.

Yeah, weird coincidence, eh? Sure, aspirin killed Euell Gibbons, but no one liked him anyway. ;’) Thanks hennie pennie.

The problem is that we view minor pain as really bad. Pain doesn’t bother me. I look at it as a sign that something is wrong. Most of the time, I can just tough it out.

BBC News - Morphine 'might spread cancer'

"Laboratory tests suggest morphine could in fact encourage the spread of cancer, for which it is routinely prescribed to relieve pain from surgery and tumours.

"US scientists say the opiate promotes the growth of new blood vessels which deliver tumours oxygen and nutrients.

"Speaking at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Boston, they also claim to have found a drug which....."
