Doolittle got the Medal of Honor.
The rest got the DFC.
I was reading about Tom Griffing this morning after hearing him interviewed on the radio recently. Still alive, still very vital!
A friend of mine said that her father was on Doolittle’s raid and that he had turned down the Medal of Honor. Just a story I expect.
As of a few months ago there were nine remaining Doolittle Raiders still living. The last two who died, died within a day of eachother. Not just the last remaining Raider but the last two raiders will open the bottle to toast their comrades.
Tom Griffin is on the radio right now.
My dad was on the Silver Queen when it went down over Zagreb, Yugoslavia, Oct..16, 1944.The crew bailed and saw it hit, but no explosion. Fuel tanks had been hit and they were out of gas. All ten crew members made it back to US. Eight were captured. My Dad and one other, with help of the Partisans, finally got back to Bari, Italy after 94 days. The turret gunner on that flight was Gensel (sp) from Chicago. Dad is 90 and very proud to be part of the Greatest Generation. Only last summer did he start talking about his experiences and I have written EVERYTHING down. He has mentioned Doolittle...gotta ask more about that. His memory is still a steele trap when it comes to WWII.
