Well, Toyota still imports over 50% of all the vehicles they sell, Honda imports near 50%, as does Nissan... and the others really have just a token presence relative to their sales.

I’m not sure they’re so much sold on “cheaper to build in the US” than they are on the “gotta improve the corporate image, and if the states will pay to build the plant for us....” mentality...

It didn’t help, but if you had seen the executive culture at Ford, you would realize how spot-on this was. They were incompetent for many years, with people claiming their own little kingdom and refusing to help each other out. Absolute disaster of management. Even when they did get an occasional leader with half a clue, they were still rather impotent at making any effective changes.

The land costs and wages......and especially union influence are all lower there.
