<< We did once drive over to George Carlin’s house in Venice to see if he was home. He wasn’t, but his wife invited us in to hang out for awhile. >>
Oh man, too bad George wasn’t there. I bet he’d have let you guys in as well. He’d have been a blast to hang with.
Story for ya. Me and a buddy and a couple young chicks were parked on a street in Brentwood (near their house) on a summer night in ‘83 (when I was 19) listening to The Doors when my huge old Sedan DeVille’s battery died. Saw a guy in a pickup truck pull into a driveway across the street, so I flagged him down and asked for a jump. Said he didn’t have cables but that I could come in and call AAA, which I did. He kinda looked familiar. In his kitchen we saw some gold records on the wall and went in for a closer look. John Densmore, drummer for the Doors. Crazy coincidence.
AAA said they wouldn’t be there for almost an hour, which was more than fine by us. To make a long story short(er), we hung out with him for at least the next couple hours (leaving the jumped Caddy charging in his driveway) playing pool, smoking ganja out of an artsy pipe that he said was once Jim Morrison’s, and listening to unreleased recordings on his reel-to-reel he made with Bob Marley that he was real proud of. Amazing night. Real nice guy and a great host.
The girls were sitting together all shy and quiet on his couch the whole time. We forgot they were even there.
That’s a great memory. Hanging out with Densmore, playing pool. I thought maybe you were gonna say Jay Leno, I’ve heard many stories of him helping people out when their car is broken down.
The wall of gold records... just inside the front door of Carlin’s house was a long hallway lined with his gold records. At least I guess they were gold, they were awards anyway.
It's hard to tell and both Wolfe and Thompson give varying accounts of the Hells Angels all together now sex romps
There is a fair amount of back story about how it was a Cassady girlfriend maybe jealous he was cavorting with Mountain Girl..who was later paramour to Kesey and Garcia..
One for sure erroneous modern version has it as Cassady ex wife Carolyn which is very unlikely...while she did I think admit to having an affair with Kerouac mostly out of pity I think she'd hardly have been that type ...and woulda been 40 something by then....she strikes me as a mom...a wild mom but still a mom
According I think to Wolfe the damsel in questioninvited 4 angels to the shed to choo choo and the rest of course showed up uninvited and then Cassady was invited in to make it official ....as Wolfe said....it was her “movie”
Feminists hate that description that a woman could I guess invite a gang bang....well....it happens
Anyhow...it's supposedly one of these two girls..her name was Ann Murphy and could be same girl...not sure...Murphy admits it was her at La Honda and that she was with Cassady for great physical coitus.....his acclaimed stamina as a hammer.....so her appetite is admitted.....the big irony to me is I'm convinced Kerouac was queer and Cassady....hard to tell...everyone was sexually drawn to him ..and his sinewy hard physique and crazy mature.....but to me any man experiments with other men is a homosexual even if in denial....strange people...given way too much literary and cultural credence....a lurid tail covered by many......last pic is a mountain girl who was on the bus too I think ....Further
mountain girl young.....
Either Tuscaloosa or jackson Miss
Jackson was around Christmas 1978
Man they love playing there...so excited to know they had fans there
Weir and Phil kept on about it
Very small crowd by their standards...
Maybe 3500
But they were extremely warm to the crowd of southerners
I’m sure they knew they were right next to Blues and Jimmy Rodgers ....
And this must be a Siberian outpost far as long hairs went..lol..they obviously appreciated all that ...
Mountain Girl is the name I was trying to think of... but she would have been young and I doubt into the lurid stuff. La Honda Ann Murphy is suspect #1.
There was a girl in my high school class who entertained the football team in the same fashion. I sometimes wondered whether I belonged to the same species as my classmates.
I think you’re right about the ambiguous nature of Kerouac and Cassady. Allen Ginsberg and William S Burroughs were part of the Kerouac circle and they definitely were on Team Rainbow.
Kerouac was an odd duck. Blue collar Canadian Catholic at least in upbringing, he was a fan of Richard Nixon and of marijuana. But he wasn’t even a ‘60s liberal in a lot of ways much less a radical. I can’t recall where I read the bio of him, might have been in E. Michael Jones’ arch Catholic magazine.
