I saw CSNY at Atlantic City Racetrack on the day Nixon resigned. Stills was wearing a Flyers jersey. The opening act was Santana. I remember that it was a great performance, though not deafening (probably because it was outdoors).

The first time I saw Sabbath, they and Humble Pie opened for Mountain. But on the return trip, Black Sabbath was the top bill (Humble Pie and Alice Cooper opened) and they were REAL loud. It seems like the “next band to take the stage” must have the option to turn the knobs and be louder than the previous acts.
