UPDATE: Official documents show the following drugs were in Mays’ system — hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (painkiller), alprazolam (Xanax), nordiazepam (Valium), benzoylecgonine (byproduct of cocaine) and temazepam (anti-anxiety). Ethanol — alcohol — was also in Mays’ system.

Dang. Except for the coke, he was leading an All-American Drug-Free lifestyle.

On a serious note, you have to wonder when the FDA will bring the banhammer down on these multi-drug prescriptions. Anna Nicole Smith, her son, Heath Ledger all had these drug cocktails in them when they died. Granted the cocaine and booze didn’t help Mays but doctors can’t go around handing out these painkillers and anti-depressants like vitamin pills.

The guy was taking pain killers for a bad hip. Aren't pain killers opiate derivatives(aka cocaine).

Couldn't a pain killer show up as cocaine?

Hey I didn't even know him so I can't say that he couldn't have done coke, but I am still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Or does cocaine read differently on a toxicology report? Any experts out there?

People who abuse hard drugs ought to be reminded via public service announcements that these chemical cause heart problems.

depending if the screen was from blood (serum), urine or hair analysis the thing measured is usually the metabolite.. or the breakdown product of the drug.. sometimes its the actual level of the drug and sometimes it's even more complicated than that... it measures levels of stuff that is in your body that is lower than it should be... because the drug makes your body think it's making too much of something... like testosterone or growth hormone.

urine specimens are notoriously inaccurate for drug testing and are used as a "screen" for more intense testing if positive... or so I've heard...

“Mays had last used cocaine days before his death”

Wonder where his stash is?

When will the FDA step in? When the lobbyists from the Pharmaceutical companies stop pumping cash into D.C.

Cocaine is *not* an opiate, therefore narcotics would not show up as cocaine in a toxicology report. I am sure the report is accurate.

Thanks for the info.

For some reason I thought that cocaine was in the opiate category.

That’s really a shame that he was doing drugs along with the lovely cocktail of prescribed medications he was taking.

Why would a doctor prescribe 3 different kinds of anti anxiety medications. I was on one once, and they monitored me really closely. As a matter of fact, my doctor really wasn’t keen on me taking it forever.

I am no longer taking anything. My body does not like medication. If there is a side effect, I will get it.

Well, here I'll have to give him the benefit of doubt. I have a bad hip too and there are some days I'd kill for SOME SORT of pain killer. Alas, my doctor prescribes me everything BUT the heavy duty stuff. Why? He doesn't want to catch the attention of DEA by overprescribing. But he doesn't know where that line is. Thanks DEA!

I did have a question though concerning his coke usage. If he was ready for his 3d hip replacement, how the hell can he get prepped for surgery with all of those drugs AND the coke in his system? I mean surely he had to disclose all of that stuff or risk dying. Well, dying earlier than he did.

No kidding. He didn’t have much of a drug problem. All those are legal, and in this country legal = no drug!

I love how there’s like 7 or so drugs in his system and everyone is all worked up about the coke.
