"
In the end, it may not be possible to give a definitive answer..." If you're not familiar with God's word, I suppose, but to a Bible reader, its obvious: a free economy can only spring from the gospel of Jesus Christ.

And the socialists wish to purge II Thessalonians from the Bible.

"
Why use the word Capitalism? It was invented by Marx.
Isnt there a better word for 'the freedom of individiduals to keep their own property'?" Yes, its simply called Freedom. - We do need to stop allowing any socialist to define any term; they are dishonest, greedy, slothful, and hate-driven.

"
Actually the word 'capitalist' predates Marx by a half-century or so." No, not in the sense in which he uses it.

“While it (capitalism) is not an equalizer, it was never intended to be.”
I agree that free enterprise (capitalism) was not intended to be an equalizer. However, I think that over time the equal opportunity of free enterprise will tend toward equal results. I don’t think business acumen is inherited. The children and grandchildren of accomplished entrepreneurs will fritter away much of their wealth. Ted Kennedy may be augmenting his wealth, but it is due to his influence as a senator in influencing legislation that benefits his businesses. In other words, it due to government corruption. Ditto for the Clintons and for Hussein Obama.

. . . but their expressed desire is for a more fair, equitable and just system.Expressing this desire is what they do to mask their avarice, so as to fool themselves and their friends. When you say often, you suggest that you do ascertain an individual's motivations. This is what prompts my question.

Capitalism is no better or worse than the citizens who employ it as a system of commerce. Socialism, on the other hand, is always worse as a system than the collective sum of its people. Human beings deserve better than the endless gray and dreary grindstone to which Socialistic systems harness people. Creativity, freedom, growth, beauty, and the use of ones' talents have a legitimate and crucial role, even in a fallen world.
For 'capitalism' read 'free markets'.

Sorry, I just tend to take people at their word. Call me naive.

This seems to be the basis on which "politics" moves these days. In short, as far away as possible from the idea of capitalism as both the foundation and expression of fruitful human liberty.
Indeed. Thank you for your wonderful essay-post, dearest sister in Christ!
