Thank you for teaching your children our shared American Dream (my grandparents from Italy, had to travel to Canada to be “on ice” to get their turn to come here legally. They’d already accepted enough Italians, so they had to come in as Canadians! LOL Now, if I could only follow the hockey puck on the TV screen....)

Your mom sounds like my grandfather. He had a flag in a vase in the living room, atop the TV set. When the baseball game came on, Saturday afternoon, he would get up and put his hand on his heart and try to sing (mangled) the anthem. He only annoyed me when he got excited over DiMaggio or Berra. We were in Cleveland and the Yanks were POND SCUM. :)

As long as families such as yours and mine are here, there’s hope. There really is!

It's only after what is derisively called "white flight" in the late 50s through the 70s that the Bronx became a hellhole-Whose fault is that? The whites left because the wonderful "people of color"-your vibrant ilk-were trashing their neighborhoods, and robbing, raping and killing them.

That was the net effect, but in many neighborhoods it started through our own bigotry. The first blacks to move into better neighborhoods were generally the doctors, lawyers, businessmen or other professionals; they could afford it. Some whites did not choose to stay long enough to see what kind of neighbors they would be, but sold in a panic. They accepted lower offers than prior sales, and paved the way for investors to convert formerly owner occupied homes to rental properties.

Then the misguided social programs that started in the 60's destroyed the black family and caused most of today's problems.

The destruction of the family and particularly of the “black family” definitely is one of the largest factors contributing to today's problems, but I take exception to the use of the term “misguided” in describing it. Some of the actions by those setting those social programs in motion might be attributed to naivete, but the vast majority were cold, calculated political moves designed to establish a voting block. Reading any of Alinsky’s writings or Cloward-Piven's, makes it abundantly clear that blacks and other minority groups have been pawns of the communists.

Just what I thought-your pad is in a very nice area of the West Village, only a few blocks away from the late great bar Chumley's. One of the apartments in your building (yours?) is currently on sale for over $2 million. Niiiiice. Good to see a humble public servant living large. My tax dollars at work.

According to ManhattanKids, it's 999 square feet. Purchased eleven years ago for $360k with two mortgages totaling $324k. Her apartment is now in hock a total of $533,581. It is Zestimated to be worth $1.3m, down $108K in the last month. However, a commenter on ManhattanKids suggests $900k tops would be more like it. So, she'll probably make a few hundred thousand when she sells it. What should she do in DC? Rent until prices bottom?

On her 2007 Financial Disclosure Report, she lists bank accounts totaling 50 to 115k as her only financial assets. According to the Washington Post,

When asked recently how she managed to file such streamlined reports, Sotomayor, according to a source, replied, "When you don't have money, it's easy. There isn't anything there to report."

So, I think our wise Latina was one of the ones Barney Frank had in mind when he helped quash attempts to rein in Fannie and Freddie. Her apartment has provided a nice supplement to her measly judicial salary.
