I would try Ramius's suggestion, but we about at the "Call ISP tech support" stage.

By the way, you can go wherever you want on the Internet by handling your own DNS queries.

Goto http://network-tools.com/, select Network Lookup, and type the URL of the site you want to visit (e.g. www.freerepublic.com) into the box and click Go. Once you have the site's numerical IP address, just copy that into your browser's address window instead of the usual http:// info, and hit enter.

did you try the “release/renew” option? That sounds promising at this point. I should’ve added that if it fails it may also be a problem right in your router, since that’s probably your DHCP box, unless you’ve got some other boxes plugged in behind it. Have you got anything else there besides that? A wireless access point or a switch or firewall device of any kind?

If so... it’s a good thing to try just rebooting them all, and go in order from outside-in, that is, from the Internet toward your computer, and reboot that last. Let each come up fully before you do the next one.

If that doesn’t do it, then I think it’s time to talk to your ISP helpdesk and see if they’ve got an outage of some kind. It’s not uncommon.

Change your DNS to OpenDNS:

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

How to change it in XP: Control Panel->Network Connections->(whatever says "Connected")->Properties->(scroll down and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP))->Properties->Use the following DNS server addresses

Do you have a router and modem or a combo? The DNS settings of importance is what your router reports. The ipconfig /toggles only affect your binding to your router. What you need is the DNS 1 and DNS 2 along with the gateway reported by your router through your modem. If you have a dynamic IP you should be able to logoff and back on your modem using the Status of your router. Frequently, you need to bypass the router and get a new modem IP “lease”.

Before going to too much trouble you should know that IE8 is causing a number of some strange problems. The red X is generally a security feature. Do you have a yellow bar under your Links box.? It may be asking if you want to download (load) the pictures.

BTW, I'm becoming partial to Spyware Terminator. It has saved a number of my machines with pesky malware. You have the restore point option, but with IE8, I'd leave that as a last resort.

Good luck.
