Fame and fortune are a double edged sword, below is a description of Howard Hughes at the time of his death .... his estate was valued at 2.5 billion dollars in 1976. It was obvious he could not care for himself and no one would intervene.
“Hughes was reported to have died on April 5, 1976, his reclusive activities and drug use made him practically unrecognizable; his hair, beard, fingernails, and toenails were quite long, his tall 6’4” (193 cm) frame now weighed barely 90 lb. (41 kg), and the FBI had to resort to fingerprints to identify the body.
A subsequent autopsy noted kidney failure as the cause of death. Hughes was in extremely poor physical condition at the time of his death; X-rays revealed broken-off hypodermic needles still embedded in his arms and severe malnutrition. While his kidneys were damaged, his other internal organs were deemed perfectly healthy”.

Really sad. My Godmother was under contract to him and loved to tell HH stories. Most people don't know that the plane crash that nearly killed him left him in horrible, racking pain and completely deaf. (Somewhere there's a list of his injuries, you can't imagine someone could live after that.)
She said he became reclusive because of his embarrassment over not being able to hear, but he had something incredible delivered to her on her birthday every year till he died. I never heard her say a word against him.

Too funny considering he might have to join the white supremacist faction in order to survive his jail time.
