If you look at pic 2 at the top of the thread and this :

It should prove that both are cotton mouths,,,
“Western Cottonmouth, piscivorus leucostoma (pictured on this page), “
Notice the heads,,,
I’m 60yo+ from Louisiana and have killed many of them,,,
Where are you from if ya’ don’t mind me askin’ ?...;0)

So.. if you know better, why do you write like a thirteen year old retarded kid?
Is it lack of education, inability to use a keyboard, laziness or what?

Dude edzoe, you went over the line. Would you kindly remove the pics labeled as humblegunner in the properties? Also ed, when are you gonna realize you were wrong about the snake? It was a stinking old cotton mouth that no one needs in their back yard. Why are you so stubborn to not understand that?
To: humblegunner
I took a field herpetology course over 30 years ago but the head is not a black rat snake, you are right, the head looks like a viper head even though the body looks like a common rat snake.
To: Domestic Church
the head looks like a viper head even though the body looks like a common rat snake. Thus my confusion.
It's better dead at any rate.

I’ve got plenty of rat snakes on our rural property and even have one loose in the house down stairs in the basement from the skin we find ever year. I’ve watched them eat with my kids...the head shape is different from the pictures shown at the beginning of the thread.

Who knew killing a snake would cause such a ruckus???
Well, to be transparent, I very well might try to capture a snake I know not to be poisonous.
If I ran across yours, not only would I not be alarmed as it’s like no moccasin I’ve ever seen, I’d additionally probably mess with it as I’ve never seen anything like it.

Id additionally probably mess with it as Ive never seen anything like it. And that is why it is dead.
Better safe than sorry. It was a big sucker and looked like it could kill my cats.
On my property? Death sentence.

Oh, no argument on the sentence and execution, I just really, really want to get that snake IDd as I don’t fear it and need to know if I should.
Snakes move around. While the US technically has 4 poisonous types of vipers, not true, as we import all of Mexico’s tiny little deadly vipers, in fact a woman was killed by one a few years back in one of our grocery stores while husking some Mexican corn.
Hey, man, just fedex me the snake on ice. I’ll figure this out.

Hey, man, just fedex me the snake on ice. Ill figure this out. Sucker is rolling along the bottom of the San Jacinto river now
or has perhaps reached the gulf. Fish food, one way or the other.
I'll keep an eye out for his kinfolks, though.
You'll be first in line to receive a biological sample.

The first two fish I caught as a little child were cottonmouths. I dont remember if it was at Sam Houston State or Dave Crockett State Park. My mom cut off their heads with a machete. I had quite the mom! I hope you got some really nice stuff for Mom today - she's earned the best.
