Any diet considerations anyone knows about?
Interesting thread... i.e. DEET...
Nothing beats Florida.
What I’ve learned about skeeters is that there are many varieties, and each is attracted by some different combination. What I know is that they have poor eyesight, and the white light from fluourescent bulbs blinds them, so if you install white CFLs outside, you can give yourself a head start. This buys you about 2-5 minutes.
As for other repellents, there is this old school way of deterring them, and it has to do with a plate and some lemon in the plate, I think. I’ll look it up and get back to you.
Not a diet, but a surefire cure for the little pests is DDT. It did the job exceptionally well and did not do any of the other absurd things it was accused of.
Bring back DDT and we can end the slaughter of upwards of 100 million people due to mosquito-borne illnesses since DDT was banned.
Burt’s Bees Insect Repellent does the job for me. It’s all natural and smells good too.
Not a “total” solution ... we have no-see-ums here in S. Carolina that fly right into your eye, or up your nose, or into your hair and they BITE. I’m a fisherman and they drive me nuts. Started wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants (all light weight stuff from Columbia at Bass Pro) then got a mosquito net hat! Yep, its a hat that has a roll down mosquito net that covers your head/face/neck. A little deet on the wrists and ankles and I’m ready for the wiley bluegill. No “no-see-ums” and no mosquitos. My neighbor thinks I’m the Unibomber when I wear the hat ... he’s a little frightened of me for many reasons. The hat, the Gadsden flag patch ... etc ... all seems normal to me!
We live on the coast of North Carolina and sometimes the misquitos are large enough to have sex with chickens, so getting them to bite other people is a worthy cause.
Moose cheese!
When we owned horses I used to get a spray mixed by a herbalist. (I didn’t like spraying a bunch of chemicals on my critters.) I don’t remember what naturals were in it but it worked pretty good and, my point is, I used myself.
the diet consideration i have seen so far are all effective in my experience(including the pickles)
What I have not seen mentioned yet is that basil plants are a mosquito repellant.
of course, I don’t need them since I eat so many pickles...
I don’t know about keeping them away, but aloe leaf works get rid of the itch. It works for burns and wasp stings too. I have not found a commercial product that works. I keep live plants around.
Plant a bunch of Lavendar and then when she is outside have her grab a few flowers and rub it on her arms and legs. This is what I did for years when we had lavendar and never got a singlke bite even though I am very fair skinned. For some reason misquitos don’t like the smell of Lavendar and it is wonderful for keeping the mosquitos away.

Whatz a mosquito? Almost never see any here (seriesly). No standing water, no mosquitoes, no gnats, no thanks.

Indoors: For babies in cribs, you can invest in a crib mosquito net. Goes over the whole crib, bars and all.
We had done some camping in New Jersey. Overnight my girls would get bitten by the mosquitos — looked like they had the “pox”.
Was told that Feverfew herb would repel the mosquitos. I got it and planted it in our garden (it is invasive, watch out). Everytime we went to New Jersey, we took some and rubbed it on ourselves. No mosquito bites.
Read up on Feverfew in a herb book. It is not good for cooking in any recipe. Its fernlike with yellow small flowers in the fall. It is perennial. Highly recommend for this purpose.
Cedar Cide. It is great stuff. All natural. I use it in the house and then spray the yard once a month. www.cedarcide.com
I think it was developed for the military to combat sand fleas or something like that. Turns out that it repels/kills...mosquitos, fleas, spiders, scorpions, etc etc. It will even keep snakes out of your yard. It is expensive but worth it in my opinion.
by the way...they do have a personal version that you can spray on yourself
