That photo was shot on the Friday round at the 1960 US Open at Cherry Hills in Denver.
HBO did a documentary on it that was really well done.
As I wasn’t born yet, I have no personal recollections of course, but you had Arnie, Jack and Bobby all in contention late in the day on Saturday’s final round(remember they didn’t play tourneys on Sundays back in the day). Jones faded, the 20 year old Jack missed a 1 foot putt on 13 cause he didn’t fix the ball mark and Arnie ended up winning.
GREAT STUFF INDEED

He missed all of '49 because of the accident, and never played the PGA after that. He never played the British Open....except for '53, when he won. In 1953, when Hogan might well have won the Grand Slam, it was impossible to play both the British Open and the PGA due to schedule and travelling trans-Atlantic. So who knows? Still and all those five years 1948 to 1953 are a remarkable feat. Who knows what Ben might have accomplished had he not had the auto accident. Which was another reason he stopped participating in the PGA - it was match play with I believe a starting field of 64, and after the accident his legs just couldn't handle six rounds of walking.

A one-iron..... have never hit one in my life! Does any player, pros included, even carry one anymore?

Is a broadcast network carrying the weekend play? The Master's has been broadcast by CBS since ... like forever!
This year DirecTV is also showing it.

par 3 update.....If you have Tim Clark in your Masters pool as your winner, bad news my FRiends. With a -5 score(22)over the 9-hole layout, Tim Clark(South Africa)won todays par 3 contest by 2 shots. And that is because.... no winner of the Par-3 has ever gone on to win the full tournament.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!

Isn't that picture from a US Open, the year just after Hogan's accident? It is, simply, a fantastic photograph. It's from the US Open held at Merion CC outside Philadelphia in 1950.

Greg and Chrissie are obviously very happy. He makes sure it is obvious every time he is interviewed. He went through a brutal divorce. He was seeing Chrissie before he left his wife. Now, whenever he/they are interviewed, they fawn all over each other and "talk sexy". Yesterday, at the par three tournament, he was asked about having her caddie for him. He responded, "She is great with the lines, well, ha ha, just look at her. She has all the lines, ha ha (drool drool). I can't think of many golfers on TOUR who would talk like that about their wife on camera. Besides, it is terribly disrespecful to his ex-wife and kids to keep talking about how he is happy for the first time in his life.

Does any player, pros included, even carry one anymore? At least as of a couple of years ago, there were a few, but mostly the older guys. But anymore, I think it's pretty few--why would you when you can carry an oversized wood? A lot easier to hit.
I read something about Hogan one time about how he was a meticulous planner of his rounds. One year, when the US Open was at Merion, he didn't bring a seven iron. He was asked why, and he said "there are no seven iron shots at Merion." I think that's pretty remarkable.

So....the field chasing after Chad Campbell at -7 65.
Tiger misses a birdie putt on 17 and bogies 18, flied the green, horrible comeback shot that rolled all the way down to the middle level.
Friday should be cool, Tiger paired with Cink and J. Singh, going off at 1052am.
I downloaded the iPHONE Masters app and was able to stream Amen corner for an hour over lunch...
NO BOWING allowed!

He was even at the turn, so nice back 9 for T!!
I think Chad got to thinking about breaking records down the stretch. And we all know what happens next, especially on a track such as Augusta National....
Other first day goodies:
Larry Mize in the mix after a fine 67.......
Gary Player shooting his age, almost(78)in his last Masters.
Greg Norman at -2, not bad!!! I still want to think he’ll be lurking late Sunday.
And last but not least.....
Sandy Lyle shoots even par. That’s most impressive.
