Is this bitdefenders version of the same thing? It seems easier and only takes a minute or two.

It’s because these were the first tools created based off the research. The researchers shared their information with the likes of BitDefender, but companies usually take a little longer to come out with their versions. In this case it appears they responded within a day or so, probably because they had a deadline of today to get it out there.
I assume that it reached all the big players by Sunday, so all of our updates from yesterday probably included it, avast for example had updates yesterday but none today so far.
They were told as early as Friday, which was when the guys figured it out. They had a proof of concept scanner ready for Monday morning.
