As someone who spent 25 years in the military...I wouldn’t have bothered with a career under your rules. I spent most of my career deployed 5-6 months/year. I averaged 60 hr work weeks, and that figure goes thru the roof in a combat zone.

If you want the government to be the employer of last resort, your idea has merit. Otherwise, is sucks.

BTW - my wife just started work at the VA Hospital. They are federal jobs. She is stunned at how many excess employees there are, and how few actually do any useful work. The military has a few spots like that as well - you could eliminate every Numbered Air Force and several ASOCs with no discernible impact...but your approach would be a disaster.

OK - only senators, reps, executive level and judges.

Sure, let’s target one group of people we don’t like. What could possibly go wrong?

Government employees should be paid what ever the US average civilian pay is for a similar job.

They do already for the "blue collar" wokers. Normally, similar jobs in the private sector are actually slightly higher than civil service positions. We have wage surveys every two years that determine the wage scales.

i worked as a defense contractor for 12 years in various parts of the US. i supported most military services as well as DoE. working in downtown washdc is an eye opener when you first get there.

o so many cars are just 2 or 3 years old (nice $$ floating around)
o VERY few people have a hard charging attitude (especially compared to someone coming from Boston)
o roads were packed @ 4:01 as everyone left on the dot
o the various governmental services were just horrible (similar comparable to MA, altho FL has great gov’t services)
o seeing the ‘moat’ made of people; so slow and infuriating at their task, that people just walk away
