In England they used be tough - they had a type of toilet paper that consisted of little sheets of wax paper that came in a box. Neither soft not absorbentI remember the shock of discovering this on my first trip to the UK. My Mom joked that after using the public restrooms, we now had a whole new use for Chapstick!

When I was over there we had a joke:
Q: What’s the difference between British toilet paper and sand paper?
A: Sand paper is only rough on one side.

I thought this was going to be another “you Americans need to use a bidet” article!
I agree with a couple of other posts, trees are a CROP! My family was in the wood products industry for a lot of years and the whole industry was almost destroyed 20 years ago by the spotted owl lovers.
In any conversation about this issue, the conversation has to revolve around the word “CROP”. This is the best way to counter the radical environmentalists.
I did hear something in the news a few years ago that 3rd growth forests were not as productive or struggling compared to 1st or 2nd growth. Anyone else hear that? I suspect is was a weak attempt by the radicals to counter the “trees are a crop” argument.

Just wondering.
Forests are sustainable, and renewable. I am a cabinetmaker, and my brother is a printer. We cheer when another tree dies.
And I always loved "When you run out of toilet paper, wipe your a$$ with a spotted owl".

Americans farm trees to make paper. There are more trees now than ever before My uncle worked for more than 40 years in the forestry industry. Planted more than 2 million trees during his career. The trees were planted as a crop, to be harvested. Some for paper (faster growing species), some for utility poles, some for Christmas trees, some for the decorative trim inside a future space yacht.
He was an environmentalist in the purest sense of the word. A WWII veteran (German POW), he hunted, fished, loved the outdoors and shared that love with his children & nieces & nephews.
When he took us camping, we always took along good TP!

LOL!! Subconsciously I guess I did mean Tissue! One other thing....I really miss the smell of my uncles cedar mill. It's funny how smells bring back a lot of memories (OK FReepers, be nice) and I have a lot of memories from freshly cut cedar. Ah, the smell of a HARVESTED tree!!!

Good TP is a must. And this Hersho-butz guy has probably never done without it. After the Peace Treaty between Israel and Egypt, my dad went to Egypt to work on an ag project for 2 years. He took along CASES of the good TP. He simply said, “I’m not taking any chances”. Smart-smart man.
