Not a barter chain per se. This idea needs to be as user-friendly as Ebay, but with the localism of Craigslist.
As far as govt. trying to track down barter income — good luck with that - do you pay tax on stuff you sell online?

"I would love to do that but you are right. It would have to be a mass effort. How could we go about doing this. I would love to tell the IRS to go to hell. That they have gotten all the money they are ever going to get from me!" We don't really have to stop paying taxes to start bleeding the beast. For instance, I'm a certified PC technician. What's to say I can't start to develop a social network so that when I need car repair, I go to a certified mechanic. Just saying...

Encouraging people to break the law is wrong. I'll stick with what I can do legally. You need to change your account name to A_Torie.

"The only barter that is really safe is ad-hoc barter." Exactly. Avoid organized barter like the plague. If it's not an outright scam, it is at the very least track-able by the tyrants.

I’m skeptical about that.

Exactly - nothing has to be organized. That is the absolute antithesis of capitalism. Allow millions of people to make millions of private choices.
The infrastructure already exists - Craigslist is the key. There are no records of transactions (and the agreements backing them) being made between private parties, only offerings for sale or purchase.

It would help if everyone who engages in such a protest were to place the money in an escrow account of some sort, like with their attorney or tax person. The purpose would be to demonstrate that they are not just trying to avoid paying taxes.
Someone might have already mentioned this and if so I apologize for the duplication. I have to be someplace very shortly and don’t have time go through all the responses, but don’t want to miss a chance to point it out.

If you want to starve the beast, then simply boycott new goods.
This will drive down production/employment/taxes, as well as drive down production/profits/savings->Treasuries.
Boycott new goods. Buy 'new' used items from private parties. Starve the beast of both its tax & deficit funding sources.

You think they are going to place 1,2,3 million tax-paying citizens in jail?

They won't even place 1,2,3 million people in prison for the same well publicized “crime”...let alone 33% of the tax-paying pop.

Not here.
And not American's.
This country is I surely hope...different.
Not to mention the info exchange is high speed...and I would hope the "understanding" is better amongst the people...
Frankly I'm not going solo...but if I saw some momentum with this thing, politicians, powerful people, doctors, lawyers, big business, little business et al...I'd be there.
I'm not just going to sit around..saying it can't work...They will place you all in jail...You can't fight the man, crap. : )

"Not here. And not American's. This country is I surely hope...different." Then why don't you set up another Bonus Army camp and see if one of today's politically ambitious military leaders treats you any differently.
To: MeanWestTexan
Too late for 2008 tax period but there is time to organize 2009. An effort like this would have to be grassroots. Organizers would need to formulate a plan using sympathetic tax experts (CPA), tax lawyers, etc.

"Nice try....but that's comparing apples to oranges........." No, that is another example of the citizens against the government. Rather than launch a personal crusade why don't you do something more effective. Why don't you see where your state and local communities are collecting funds on behalf of the federal government and force them to lawfully stop on 9th and 10th amendment grounds. Remember, the Constitution established the Bill of Rights not as a ceiling to our rights, but a floor.
