Sorry, it was the “National Union Party,” the Republicans merging with some pro-Union Democrats and others for the special circumstances of the Civil War. Johnson was won of those pro-Union Democrats, even though, once the Civil War was over, he cast his lot with the former slaveholders of the white South. No, he was never a Republican - and as I said, fought tooth and nail with the Republican Congress, possibly the greatest level of friction between the executive and legislative branches in American history.
