"From what I’ve read, Winslet is extraordinary in her transformation of the character in her final years."

The last half of the movie is excellent. The first third of the movie, IMHO, is way overdone on the sexual relationship between a 15 or 16 year-old boy and Kate Winslet's character. It didn't have to be so explicit.

I haven’t read the novel, but I hear it is very faithful to that. That is kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. If you stick to the novel, you have what you are talking about. If you don’t people are mad about that.

Yeah, Hollywood has a tendency to do that. I think that whenever movie directors make a film like this, they should always have a major prude on every set to add a sense of balance, seriously. I watched Monster’s Ball this weekend, which I actually thought was a very good movie, except the sex was too explicit and unncessary...I think the director could have shown the 2 character’s need for each other without the explicit scenes.

I CANNOT believe that Penn won over Rourke ... OH YEAH - HOMAGE to the gay community !!!

A few years ago the Academy accused Penn of “Oscar shopping” with “I am Sam” ... he did the same thing this year.

AT LEAST Rourke takes challenging risks as an actor ...

WORST WIN since “Shakespeare In Love” beat out “Saving Private Ryan” for Best Pic ...

I would say "American Beauty" winning was the worst, but that would be a close second.

Did I miss something or did Penn neglect to thank his wife?

At last he should have called for an investigation and house arrest.

Maybe he's still in character. If you know what I mean.

Hmmm ... forgot about that one.

Best speech tonite was the Japanese guy who won for foreign language film (Departure?) ... short, to the point, and humble.

NOT that drivel that Spicoli spewed ...

Agreed the year that American Beauty and Ciderhouse Rules won all the awards was the year I finally understood how unremitting hostile Hollywood was to traditional Judaeo-Christian morality, and how self-consciously nihilistic their embraced alternative really was.

I think I’ve been to the movies three or four times since.

The only really high quality movies that were “Oscar quality” in recent years have been foreign movies. Hollywood can make movies will special effects up the wazzoo, but they can’t tell a story worth a crap.

I think Dark Knight is an exception to that rule. A great film that combines special effects, story, and art beautifully. Too bad it wasn’t nominated for Best Picture.

Class seems to have made a comeback at this years Oscars, Sean Penn’s political rant notwithstanding. Hugh Jackman pleasantly surprised me as an all ‘round entertainer type. I liked the former winners of the major categories coming onstage to talk about the nominees. A fresh approach. Sophia Loren still makes me smile ;o). I was impressed with the Bollywood meets Hollywood musical numbers from Slumdog and was happy it won best picture.

From what I’ve read, Winslet is extraordinary in her transformation of the character in her final years. They say that you really can’t recognize that it’s Kate Winslet.

Then give them the Oscar for makeup ...

Melissa Leo gave a WAAAY better performance in “Frozen River” ...

Monster’s Ball is one of those watch one time and one time only movies. Well acted, painful to watch.
