This Landlord should dragged outside and publicly beaten. This is absolutely ridiculous.

You actually advocate that?

That’s incredibly awful.

I really hope there are no legal grounds to make the ex-husband pay the back rent.

Wasn't my suggestion, but I'll second it.

do you know if this is about "breaking a lease" or unpaid rent? shouldn't the landlord have requested first and last month's rent before the tenant moved in?

Yep, I posted from the Daily Mail early this AM with keywords of “landlord; murder; pardo; victim”. No problem, I’ve tread upon others myself.

This author of this article is the one who should be dragged outside and publicly beaten. No mention of whether the ex-husband’s name is on the lease? I’m assuming he was on the lease, otherwise he could tell the landlord to take a hike. The author, however, didn’t see fit to ask the question, I guess.

If his name was on the lease he's probably responsible for the rent.

If not, I'm guessing the woman's estate would be responsible for the rent if they want to keep the place for a little while before they move her stuff out. And if her estate can't pay it, then whoever else (presumably her ex-husband) wants to keep the apartment. But I can't see how they could go after the ex-husband for back rent if his name is not on the lease.

How would the landlord know the ex husband’s name if it wasn’t on the lease?

I think you made a mistake. Your handle should be "Mind Lost."

Just saying.

Actually, I do.
Without a lot of supporting information, that is a monumentally stupid statement to make.

Posting a deficient story together with an unsupported opinion is puerile in the extreme.

Unless he signed or guaranteed the lease, he is free to tell them to frick off.

She didn't pay January's rent, she was dead.

Ex-husband told to pay slain woman's rent

The landlord informed her former husband, Carlos Ortiz, on an invoice dated Jan. 29 that she gave "insufficient notice to vacate." The company says it is owed $2,821 in rent and penalties.

Alicia Ortiz's two surviving daughters moved in with their father in Ontario and within three weeks had to move their belongings out of their mother's apartment, said attorney Scott Nord,

Nord said the apartment management company called Carlos Ortiz soon after the shooting to say that Alicia Ortiz didn't pay the rent, then it followed up with a three-day notice to pay up or leave.

I get calls from creditors for my ex-spouse, kids, ex-employees, whatever, they just call whoever they think they can pressure into sending a few bucks or who they can make so miserable they'll turn the screws on the debtor or even pay it off themselves.

I've had debt collectors tell me I was responsible for the debts of my ex-wife. They're just dirtbag scum.

Obviously. First of all, even if we take the story at face value, the landlord did nothing illegal. You might not care much for the law, but I don’t think we beat someone because we think he made a cold or callous demand.

Second, you’re an idiot if you take a story like this at face value and make a snap judgment of that sort based only on it.

Oh for crying out loud!

Don’t be outraged at the expressions of outrage.

Get mad at the landlord!

Based on what? A one-sided news article that doesn’t even mention whether his name is on the lease?
