If Travolta (whose politics I hate) wants to reject the current notions of autism and bossy people like the Kennys who think they're better qualifed to determine how Travolta deals with the challenges God set before him than Travolta himself, then more power to Travolta. My heart goes out to the Travolta family and I pray that God gives them comfort and strenth; loosing a teen child (been there) is horrible; it's worse when the Whole World is Watching and louts like the Kennys (and you?) presume to make it worse by saying YOU'RE the best Nanny in the Room and if Travolta had just listened to you, why, his son would still be alive, and that Travolta must be immoral and wicked for not listening to you and the Kennys! As far as I'm concerned, you and the Kennys stink.

Alice, posts like yours are ugly, invasive, and arrogant, and give conservatives, FReepers, and Republicans a bad name. One man's "child abuse" is another man's compassion and respect for dignity. Only the most arrogant, conceited people don't get that.

I'm all for being judgemental about other people when it comes to choosing or rejecting them for some particular purpose, whether it's babysitting the kids or representing me in office. On the other hand, those who judge other people for sport, on things that lie solely between the person being judged and God, are contemptible.

My brother died of cancer a few years ago, and it has been very hard on my parents, my dad especially. My dad has never been the same, and always seems sad or mad.

Maybe he wasn’t autistic, but just had seizures.

My daughter is not autistic, but she sometimes seems like it. She has a brain injury that has caused seizures, speech problems, and lots of social problems. Autism therapy is very different than therapy for her.

Travolta and his wife have also enthusiastically supported our troops.

Prayers for the family.

A house caretaker found Jett, 16, unconscious in a bathroom late Friday morning.

The teenager had last been seen going into the bathroom on Thursday and had a history of seizures, according to the statement.

Just read that one of Mia Farrow’s daughters died last week. I do not remember reading anything about that.

Does not look like you are being flamed and everyone, including Finny, appear to agree with you. I think you’re both right on

Some parents of autistic kids get touchy so I played it safe

AP reports the child was seen going into the bathroom on Thursday and wasn’t found until late Friday morning by a caretaker. So it appears he had the seizure on Thursday and spent the entire night and most of the morning dying on the bathroom floor.

Travolta’s sister and her family live in this area. She’s also a fine actor, as is her husband, with both appearing frequently in local theatre. Her brother, John, is an occasional visitor. Though I’ve enjoyed their theatrical performances, I’ve never personally interacted with the Travoltas. I know a number of people who have, and I’ve never heard anything about them other than that the entire family, including John and his wife, are humble, gracious people.

How sad for the family.

Or, he could have hit his head and died immediately. Or the seizure could have also killed him immediately, as one did to my cousin, who was in her final year of law school. I don’t know how long it would take to die from a seizure.

Police report is here. It says he was found by a caretaker unconscious at 10am, but the police weren’t notified until 11:40a. Why did they wait more than 1.5 hours to call the police?

And THAT is why this is all so darn odd. There have been rumors for a while regarding Travolta and his son's illness, whether it was autism, etc. But the more recent rumors are those saying he 'hides' his son away, and is neglectful.

If Jett fell on Thursday and wasn't found until the next morning, all that speculation is brought to the forefront again- and there may be something to it. How do parents not check in on their sleeping children before they go to bed, caretaker or not?

I am sorry for their loss, and Travolta may be a great guy and all, but there is something inherently odd about all this.

Never, unless there's a reason to assume something's wrong. They all go, at the appointed times, to their various rooms (4 boys, 2 girls, Anoreth and her dog), and we assume everything's fine unless we hear something very outre'.

It’s not just that the kid fell on Thursday and wasn’t found until Friday morning.

It’s also that after he was found, it took over 1.5 hours for the police to be notified.

Something strange is going on down there.

Their son had a history of illness and seizures. To not check on him seems extremely wrong, IMHO.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Police in the Bahamas say John Travolta’s teenage son has died after injuring himself at the actor's vacation home.

Police spokeswoman Loretta Mackey says 16-year-old Jett Travolta hit his head in a bathtub Friday morning.

He was declared dead at Rand Memorial Hospital on Grand Bahama Island.

Jett was the oldest child of Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, who also have an eight-year-old daughter.

A spokesperson for the hospital in Freeport said she could not release any information because of privacy concerns.
