In February 2004, US Senate candidate Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, sent a fund-raising letter with the "alarming news" that "right-wing politicians" had passed a law (prohibiting doctors from stabbing half-born babies in the neck with scissors, suctioning out their brains and crushing their skulls).

Michelle Obama called partial-birth abortion "a legitimate medical procedure. " She urged supporters to pay $150 to attend a fund-raising luncheon for her husband, who she promised would fight against "cynical ploy[s]" to stop it.

BACKGROUND Legislation was presented on the federal level and in various states called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. It stated all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted. BAIPA sailed through the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote. Even Sens. Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother's right to "choose" stopped at her baby's delivery. The bill also passed overwhelmingly in the House. NARAL went neutral on it. Abortion enthusiasts publicly agreed that fighting BAIPA would appear extreme. President Bush signed BAIPA into law in 2002.

But in Illinois, the state version of BAIPA repeatedly failed, thanks in large part to then-state Sen. Barack Obama. Obama worried aloud that legislation protecting live aborted babies might infringe on women's rights or abortionists' rights.

In 2003, as chairman of the next Senate committee to which BAIPA was sent, Obama stopped it from even getting a hearing, shelving it to die much like babies were still being shelved to die in Illinois hospitals and abortion clinics.

Another Chicagoan is being tapped for the White House; Susan Sher, the vice president for Legal and Governmental Affairs and General Counsel at the University of Chicago Medical Center will be an associate counsel to President elect Barack Obama.

Sher is a close friend of Michelle Obama—and her boss at the U of Chicago—as well as Valerie Jarrett—incoming White House adviser. Sher will provide legal advice to the incoming First Lady according to the transition as well as working on legal issues connected with health care policy.

Sher served as Mayor Daley’s Corporation Counsel between 1993 and 1997, where she worked in City Hall with Jarrett. Jarrett also has been Sher’s overseer, as the Chair of the University of Chicago Medical Center Board and also Chair of theExecutive Committee of that board.

working at Chicago’s City Hall for Mayor Daley
and she passed it on to Valerie Jarrett, who
ended up hiring her at the Hall after dinner
with her fiance—one Barack Obama.

Sher was already at the White House functioning
as a legal counsel in the East and West wings
and as liasion to the Jewish community. In
Washington, she lives in the same Georgetown
building as Jarrett and White House Social
Secretary Desiree Rogers, also a Chicago buddy.

Susan Sher is really interesting!

She supervised a staff of 250 lawyers for the daley mob,it obvioulsy took that many of them to keep his ass out of jail evidently, and she was top dog.

Wonder what she is doing with the zero mob? Can't fathom a guess!!!

According to the Time article, that would have been around 1990 that she decided to leave law. Yet she wasn’t made inactive until 1993.

That was probably when her license was up for renewal.

Daley appointed Michelle to serve on the Chicago Landmark Commission. The current chairman of the Commission is Daley’s former chief of staff, David Mosena. Mosena was a member of Obama’s US Senate Finance Committee in 2004, with other members that included Valerie Jarrett, Tony Rezko, Rita Rezko, and Allison Davis. The committee raised more than $14 million, according to Federal Election Commission records, cited by Novak in the Sun-Times on April 23, 2007. Jarrett serves as an advisor to Obama’s presidential campaign.

If her license was yanked for disciplinary reasons then how would the status be voluntary.

Easy. Because she agreed not to fight it. I don't know if that is the fact, but it is easily possible.

I believe Bill Clinton also agreed not to fight it when his license to practice law was withdrawn. Presumably because he didn't need it--he made plenty of money in other ways--and because he didn't want the bad publicity. The same would apply to Michelle.

I don't know if that is the fact, but it is easily possible.

Anything's possible if you just wish hard enough. The reality is that it's not at all uncommon for lawyers who are not practicing to voluntarily relinquish their law office. Doing so frees them from annual fees, continuing education, and any number of petty requirements associated with maintaining the license.
