Just too darn good to be a Darwin Award winner! [video]

I was jogging down 5th Avenue in Havana one early evening. A kid went whizzing by me on his skateboard and attempted to leap from the sidewalk up to the base of the belltower on 5th and 10th Street. He went airborne and I thought he was going to make it, but his skateboard was about an inch short of the top level and he crashed; he slid across the base of the belltower on his chin and ended up banging his head on the belltower itself. Too bad that was before the day of the Flip Video.

Then a couple of years ago, following a hurricane that uprooted some big trees in my nabe, a few teeny-boppers were racing along and tried to jump over the broken slabs of sidewalk concrete. One kid yelled at me, "Hey Mister, Watch This!" I did, and like the Cuban kid before him, he missed his mark and crashed onto the pavement. I stopped and applauded, and asked what he was going to do for an encore.
