I have had a CCW permit for over 15 years and just renewed mine. I would buy a gun face-to-face to avoid the background check and paperwork trail if legal in your state. You could always get another old beater gun, but reliable like a revolver, for the nightstand and turn that one in if it ever came to that.
The only reason to consider not getting a CCW is if neither you nor anyone else in your household has EVER purchased a firearms through normal dealer channels. If you are a firearms “virgin” with no record that you ever owned one (you never filled out a form or showed ID when buying a gun), then you might be wise to stay that way.
But if you have bought a gun from a shop, then get the CCW, because you’re already in the database.
Of course, I hope you live in a free state where private gun transfers are legal, and you buy through the classified, Internet ads (from people in your state) and gun shows.
No need in my State. CWP records are linked to DMV here. They immediately know the instant they run your plates whether or not you’ve been issued a CWP. They’ll be fully prepared before they walk up on you. When the officer appears at your window, he’ll ask “are you armed?” If yes, he’ll ask where it is, and ask you to keep your hands away from it.
