I've owned a double 12X12 over 8X57JR [rimmed] Krieghof drilling built in the 1930's.

I've owned...?

Please tell you didn't sell it so I can be insanely jealous.

Somewhere along the way I had a nylon 22 that was a great gun!!

What color? I didn't have one, but my cousins each had one, courtesy of their grandfather (My great uncle). Theirs were a greenish color, which was the least common variety. Brown was most common, at least a first, then black. I liked the greenish best. I also put a hole through the flashing and the screen, on one of their upstairs windows, because one of them had left the scoped one with a round in the chamber, and I didn't check as I should have. Might have put a dent in the weather vane on the barn too. :)

Of course, they didn't fall down when they were shot with the .30 - 40 Krag rifle cartridge, either, but no one can claim that the firearms business makes any sense.

Krag

Hence the clamor for something more in the class of the 8 mm Mauser or .303 Brit. That lead to adoption of the 30-06 in the Springfield

and a little later the M1917 Enfield

and much later the Garand.

Interesting. 8x57 is no slouch I have a hunting buddy who shoots one and it is very accurate with a good punch. Not very popular in the US from what I can tell.

One of the reasons the Mauser K98k is not more popular here in the US is that commercial ammo is way underpowered to ensure that if some numbnuts tries to shoot an 8x57 round in one of the early 8mm model 88 Mausers (with .318 bore instead of .323) it will not blow up in his face due to extreme pressures.

If one handloads his own rounds, you can jack up the potency quite dramatically. The 8x57 is right up there with the .30-06 for power.

No I did not. I just didn’t post a picture, but I mentioned the .303 Brit cartridge, which is what that SMLE fires. But the US never adopted it.

Mine was the brown but over the years I have seen a black one. I have not seen one at a gun show in sometime. they must all be locked up at home for the next generation.

Here are a couple bolt action military rifles with a design that has seen action in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc. Its 7.62x54R cartridge is still used today (in different rifles) in Iraq by both sides.

BTW, I have not refinished those rifles.

Mosin Nagants may be the cheapest thing going in the milsurp world, but I like them as original as possible and mine still proudly wear their red laquer that was slopped on at the arsenal.

LOL! I know. I just try not to miss any opportunity to post a pic of one of my favorite bolt actions of all time.

Thanks for giving me one!
