Woof!
He routinely carried his weapon to the service. By chance, he happened not to attend the service in which the attack occurred. He always regretted that, and thought that he could have made a difference.

There are sheep and there are shepherds then there are Rottweilers.
I almost stopped reading several times, as I thought the leo/non leo line of thinking was getting deep...
tis why I always likened myself to the unmentioned fourth category of animal...
A RAM...
I 'live' amongst sheep, have a set of defensive weapons [including the hard head behind the horns] and will dutifully protect the flock against all comers...including 'rabid' sheepdogs...
although the general premise of the article was individualism, it all depends on who the master/trainer of the sheepdog really is...
LFOD...

I think not. The rams are a part of the sheep herd, after all, and kept for but one service, their natural protective inclinations sublimated and replaced by the *security professional* sheepdog- who is better at nipping at any stray sheep that get in line than he really is at dealing with forays on his flock from multiple predators attacking from different flanks. We are something else. And it is not a herd animal, but something more solitary- we have no great fear if we have to face the wolf pack on our ow, but they'd really rather not have to deal with one of us, even when there are several of them. Besides, there are tasty sheepo to be had, and their only protection is a sheepdog or two.
Indeed, the wolves particularly fear the thought of tangling with one of our females, particularly, especially if she's protecting her young. Nope, back to those tasty ewes and lambs for those hungry wolves. There's more of a future in that.
And by the way: the puppies who think that they're big bad sheepdogs had better not mess with us either.
Theodore Roosevelt: The American grizzly is a symbol of the American character: strength, intelligence, ferocity. Maybe a little blind and reckless at times... but courageous beyond all doubt. And one other trait that goes with all previous.
2nd Reporter: And that, Mr. President?
Theodore Roosevelt: Loneliness. The American grizzly lives out his life alone. Indomitable, unconquered - but always alone. He has no real allies, only enemies, but none of them as great as he.
2nd Reporter: And you feel this might be an American trait?
Theodore Roosevelt: Certainly. The world will never love us. They respect us - they might even grow to fear us. But they will never love us, for we have too much audacity! And, we're a bit blind and reckless at times too.
2nd Reporter: Are you perhaps referring to the situation in Morocco and the Panama Canal?
Theodore Roosevelt: If you say so... The American grizzly embodies the spirit of America. He should be our symbol! Not that ridiculous eagle - he's nothing more than a dandified vulture. Dandified!

Observation:
I have recently been struck by how little social violence, even the most extreme & prolific, affects most people. Saddam's Iraq, Nazi Germany, Sarievo (sp!?), etc.... most people manage to turn these horrible conditions into a mundane living, doing a few things to stay off the radar and otherwise coping tolerably. Those who survive stay wrapped up in their own little mental world; those who don't aren't going to worry about it for long. The sheep herd, as a whole, continues to bleat, nibble grass, and sleep ... doing nothing else so long as they are not eaten, and not concerned for long if they are next on the menu.
Just an observation of how surprisingly much people are willing to put up with.

Just so. It is exactly that effect that the smiling officers are counting on when they politely tell the sheep to board the cattle cars, with the welcome news that a refreshing shower will be awaiting them when they arrive at their destination.
Some sheepdogs use this to their advantage. Properly trained by his Master, the Komondor is both a family pet, and a close-in last-ditch defense for the sheep, because he looks like a sheep. That is, until the wolf makes the fatal mistake of not seeing one "sheep" charging out of the herd, and ripping the wolf's throat out.
Perhaps best described as a "Rottweiler in a ghillie suit" as far as temperament goes, they have to be trained young to downplay their over-protectiveness. And to get their dreadlocks started.

Thank You
Put me on it. Thanks.
Then there are sheepdogs, he went on, and Im a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.
I have felt this way for many years. Sometimes we are just nipping at the heels of the sheep, to help move them in the proper direction.
THANK YOU!!!!!
Then for sure, you'd best not overlook this:
I would venture to say that a huge majority of these violent crimes are committed by illegals, and it's only going to get worse! IF we didn't have their totals added in, it would be much, much less. These are the same criminals we're going to make citizens in the first "hundred days" of the next presiding traitor!!
Please add me to the FR Gun club ping list. Thanks!
Most of the rest of violent crimes are criminal-on-criminal. Subtract out certain geographically and socially isolated groups, and the crime rate stats plummet.
FWIW: When a notable member of such a group was asked why the perpetrators from those groups victimize members of those groups (trying to stay really PC here, sorry) instead of those outside, he responded that the perps would generally not survive such attacks.
