Obviously the portfolio of the Vice President is non-existent, even in a post-Cheney world. His positions on abortion and other issues would be unacceptable to many, but I think it could be the magic bullet that gets the independent votes needed to win this thing.
Even so, I think it sets up a real mess. McCain isn’t even guaranteed to serve two terms, or even run for two. Does this mean we’re looking at Joe Lieberman as the GOP nominee in 2012, much less 2016 when he would be. There’d have to be assurances he wouldn’t seek the Presidency, but that doesn’t mean he can’t become our standard-bearer for other reasons, god forbid. How long exactly do we want to be be lost in Moderate wilderness?
I think McCain has to start focusing on the future of the Republican Party, irrespective of his chances in November. I think he saves us a lot of heartache if he picks Romney. We don’t need another jungle in 2012.
McCain is old, we need a very reliable conservative in case something happens to him before the end of his term or terms. Lieberman is too liberal.
He should pick old Joe , he is going to lose anyway , might as well have his pal with him .
Never on a Saturday.
Lieberman is great on the War on Terror.
On every other issue, he is a classic liberal.
If McCain picks Lieberman, it would be the ultimate stick in the eye to the conservative base, and probably would help make Obama the next president.
It would be a bad move for the country, and for the GOP.
Also no offense but the midget thing is pretty ridiculous. Most people don’t remember this but George HW Bush was actually about half a head taller than Reagan, and it worked in every sense. That ticket actually has a lot of parallels to McCain-Romney, particularly overcoming personal antipathy for the sake of the election.

Right on, I agree with you! Remember McCain is not going to hold on the Conservative Base like President Bush did back in ‘04 so McCain best shot is to appeal to independents and soccer moms.
The Jindal already said hes out.”
Yes, BJ would’ve probably been a great choice - he’s certainly got a glowing political future ahead. Mitt would be a bad choice for many reasons, unfortunately.
I absolutely don’t know the answer - my gut just tells me that it MUST be someone with the “wow” factor and a real contrast to McCain, in order to capture attention away from the Obamessiah.
I like Eric Cantor. He’s relatively young ,conservative, Pro-life, and Jewish. (Also, he looks like one of the Ghost Busters.)
Whats a matter, Barry? You dont like Jews? .
It would blow the whole Barack race crap right off the map!
Jumpin Joe would SINK the RACE CARD!
I like him too, but we need him in the House. He may have national aspirations, but I doubt he’d give up his shot at being the first Jewish Speaker of the House to join a dead ticket.
It’s going to be Tommy Thompson.
A non-issue. He won’T pick Joe. I think Lieberman has good chances for being next SecState or SecDefense.
McCain is not too old....obama is too young...
And I have always liked Lieberman...not his standing on social issues. (To liberal)..but I like his strength on defense..NO doubt about his patriotism...
Hell he ought to go all the way and pick Hillary. He would beat obummer like a dog and unless he died in office Hill would be a footnote. She would take the nomination too just to piss off the dems for throwing her under da bus.
With Hillary as veep, McCain would suffer a fatal “ age related heart attack” during inauguration.
