“new cabinet level powers”? If you mean Homeland Security then you are dead wrong. Criminal Justice is my field and that needed to be done 20 yrs ago. In fact, the cooperation between CIA, FBI, SBI and other agencies has been so bad since Carter Admin. that most of unsolved crimes could have been solved if agencies shared information. I for one believe that if it were not for this forced sharing of info that we would have had another major 9/11 already. My only objection has been that FEMA should have been a seperate entitity from the criminal aspect of it, so it could be held accountable for its own spending and response.

As for Congress holding President accountable, it is you who does not understand government. The Executive Branch, The Legislative Branch and The Judicial Branch have very little control of one another..and certainly not in the way you think they should operate. Real positive change is by holding the elected officials to the ‘ACTUAL CONSTITUTION’. Positive change is not electing the democrats.

Thanks for speaking up, it seems I have an ongoing attack here because I agree with you. Too many are quick to judge without knowing how government operates, and the limited powers of the President. And where a President could do harm if elected, it is really in the foreign dimplomacy area. The actual misuse of “martial law” and when coupled with a corrupt Congress such as we now have.

Congress can by two thirds vote override his Veto. They can as well use powers of impeachment. They can indeed approve or decline his appointed Cabinet members and judges. The Legislative Branch is the only one who can remove from office via impeachment the other two branch's. Judges legislating from the bench should be considered Judaical Misconduct for example and an impeachable offense.

I don't know of two many in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement who don't think they need more powers and more departments and databases even on innocent citizens just in case ya know what I mean.

The city in my county thinks it needs 10 red light cameras for example in a 20 light town. Never mind the fact they are a direct violation of a person having the right to face their accuser in court and are actually a form of extortion. Either pay the lower fine or loose basically. It's one of the few things where you can be punished for acts you did not commit.

DHS was created as a make a political job department. The biggest problem in government is too many agencies hold federal police powers and some agencies as well have also become writers of their own laws.

As for another 9/11? I know what has stopped that. It was stopped on 9/11 on the last plane to go down. Citizens unwilling to let the hi-jackers decide their response to terrorism and responed to the threat. Armed citizens is the reaL answer but most Criminal Justice types think only they are good enough or special enough to carry a weapon and go armed without miles of red tape and government permission.

You know it's odd too that Gonzales for example wanted databases on private citizens Internet surfing yet it was perverts in the DOJ going after kids on taxpayers computers.

I think the FEDS need to get out of a lot of things including airline security. Let the airliners do it themselves. Let them put plain clothes armed officers and armed crewmembers on their planes. {what happened to arming the pilots and crew BTW?} What happened whan they put Sky Marshalls back on planes? Some clown in the Bush administration had to put them on TV showing their operations.

Limit such agencies police powers as the Tennessee Valley Authority Security to the confines of their reservation as well. Yet they travel the roads of 7 state area with nothing on their cars to identify their agency except a light bar and POLICE {no agency name} on their car doors. I can see their purpose but also a need to limit where their powers should end as well. They should end at the TVA property line unless in such cases of actual pursuit.

Yet another example of federal government going where it does not belong nor has any Constitutional right to go or establish

I know what you are talking about. She said nothing in regard with Obama. She merely said something along the lines that she isn’t sure wheter she will vote McCain. This is something different.

But she had an Obama-supporting minister perform her ceremony, a very political minister.

just as a reminder how serious this oil situation is Right about that. It's going to get even more serious.

It's going to get big time serious over the next decades. Bush had his opportunity with a Republican controlled Congress and produced nothing. Now he goes to Saudi to plea for more oil and gets, NO! while holding hands with the Saudi King.

I am embrassed. Bush is a total failure on this issue. There is no amount of spinning or parsing - our President got punked by a bunch of Islamofacist sand-lizards.

"How do we wash out the modern Augean Stable that we call "congress"?

Two things would be a start:
1. Term limites;
2. Reduced Congressinal sessions. The less time they spend in DC, the less damage they can do to our Republic.

"Bush wasted the opportunity of several generations to bring about a reversal of liberalism in this nation. Had he jumped on the oil issue from day one we would be nearly free of foreign blackmail."

My point.

"There are photos of me when I was 6 years old playing around the oil rigs as well as the property purchased to build the first plastics plant in the area."

And that has what to do with the current President failing to promote and fight for a realistic energy policy that will affect our American standard of living for years to come?

I am looking forward to you and everyone else on this thread to whine in the future about the rising costs of everything that is dependent on oil. The next time you buy ANYTHING made out of plastic, remember the base substance of that chemical product is built on petroleum. You are going to hurt.

Mark my words on this thread and this date. Your Repub hero has done little to change that dynamic. He's an idiot, and got punked by the Saudis. I'm embararred and fed up with NWO idiots like him. You just keep on supporting the status quo and watch your standard of living deteriote.

" This is, by far, one of the most disrespectful, unpatriotic and unAmerican posts that I have ever seen on FR."

You can just kiss my rear. I am probably one of the most Patriotic people you would ever be fortunate to meet. Besides my small military contribution, I have spend years and years trying to defend the original intent of our US Constitution. Bush 1, Clinton, and Bush 2 have done little to defend it. Although, I will say that Bush 2 started with the right idea about the WOT, it took General Patreus to finally provided the better stategy with the "surge".

Because I say Bush 2 was punked by the Saudis, doesn't mean I don't love my country, support and admire our troops, and sit on my butt like most and not give back to our Nation. You're a fool, if you can't see Bush has been a fool. It would not be the first time for an American president. Grow up.

I don’t place blame on anybody but Mother Nature. Oil is a totally natural, accidental gift, totally undeserved by the country that happens to have received the gift. Venezuela, Saudi, USA, Mexico, Canada, Russia. No amount of legislation can make this gift appear or disappear, although it can be and is mismanaged more often than not. Carter was on the short end of oil development and the economy began to suck. Oil was improving under Reagan so the economy began to improve. Total accident. The present situation is bad and the next 25 years will be worse and the worst thing is it didn’t have to happen. The USA could have got through the 25 years of alternative development very easily and painlessly but did next to nothing. It must be done now in conditions of general inconvenience. Nukes, whatever, must be done and the 30 years were wasted through inaction. Everybody shares the blame but blame won’t get the job done.

Congress needs to let us drill our own oil, then we don’t need the Saudis!
