I was watching that, it struck me as odd. I wasn’t paying that much attention, but I did think, “wait a minute, he doesn’t even have an accent, why are they playing the Mexican National Anthem?”
On the other hand, the guys who performed the Mexican National Anthem played it straight, and respectful. The bimbo who did the American National Anthem was awful, why couldn’t she just sing it straight? The last fight I saw, Tom Jones sang the Welsh National Anthem, he sang it great (and if anyone could mess with it, he could have) but whoever sang ours was once again awful. It’s not that, as some profess, our anthem is hard to sing - it is, BUT - this is about people who choose to mess it up and make it awful. Just sing it, that’s all.
Agree completely — our own anthem is mangled more often than not at sporting events these days. Improvisation is great for jazz, but it doesn’t work for the national anthem.
worked for me
He has since made his home in Puerto Rico, his wifes country (whatever it's called) of origin.
you don’t want improvisation? hire an automaton. She did great, I loved it. and hope to hear her sing it again.
lol...relax, kid. If you enjoyed, fine by me.
and I also enjoyed the mariachis.
Oscar de la Hoya is actually not well-liked by almost anyone who can claim descent from Mexico--legal or not!
I asked about this when it happened.
Oscar has been pandering to Mexican Americans for years. The location of this fight, the cost of the bottom end tickets and th Mexican National Anthem were all just a symptom. Oscar has never been able to handle the fact that large segments of the Mexican American community not only haven’t embraced him, they sincerely dislike him. He is desperate for the love of a group that has generally shunned him.
He now spends a lot of the year in Puerto Rico, which is where his wife is from.
