Democrats are the Party of big government and gleefully use it to control others.
Conservatives accept government as necessary but want it strictly limited.
There are a few liberals on FR and more than a few libertarians. Stay reasonably polite, watch your language and have fun.
And no matter what Darksheare tells you; there is no FReeper initiation involving melted chocolate, blind folds and a “Twister” game.
It looks like you are getting some good reading recommendations.
If you are still in school, as per your posting, I expect you to have liberal leanings anyway. (I don't just mean the influence from your parents or education). When we are younger, it is easy (and common) to say things like “Lets all get along.” But, as you grow up and take on more responsibility in your life, you will start to expand your thinking. I'm very glad you are doing this now.
Going on the assumption that you have worked some in your life, here is a good philosophical question for you:
Lets say you work 50 hours a week for our example (don't worry about pay rate, just hours). So, in a two week span, you will have worked 100 hours. Would it bother you if someone put a gun to your head and said “I will take the first 30 hours of your work?” What about the first 50 hours? How many hours would you voluntarily give up? (Assuming you had no say on what those hours were spent on).
Now, you might say that my example is harsh, but just wait to see how harsh the Fed Gov. will be if you choose not to pay all the taxes they want?
Now, who decides how much of your labor the gov. can take? Not you! It is the politicians who are voted into office by the “majority.” Sound all warm an fuzzy, but let me play devils advocate.
I'm a politician. My “JOB” is to get reelected to keep my power. All I need to get reelected is 50% of the vote. Hey, I've got a great idea. I'll promise the bottom 51% of the population that they won't have to pay any taxes. Then, I will get at least 50% of the vote because those people don't want to pay taxes, and I'm promising them a free ride. I'll just take more hours from the “EVIL RICH.”
That became a lot longer than I intended this morning. There is a great analogy between dining at a restaurant and our current tax structure, but I don't have it handy. I'll find it and post later.
