I ABSOLUTELY agree that those in the military are THE MOST UNDERPAID of ALL professions.
(As a veteran, I am certainly on your side there!)
How much would that be at $10 per hour baby sitting for 20 kids...$200 per hour. And they are supposed to teach the little monsters?!
You are a damned fool if you believe this.
I've known a number of teachers. Even dated one once... Not a one of them worked an "8 hour work day." Depending on the classes taught, they usually spent their lunch hour working while eating, were at the school an hour before classes started (7:30am), were usually there for at least an hour after class (4:00pm), and would often spend 4 to 6 hours a night working, either grading papers or planning classes.
I've also worked as an instructor (I never referred to myself as a "teacher." I taught adults how to design and run computer networks), and it required a tremendous amount of after hours work.

Right. If everybody had a PHD there'd be no one to pick up the garbage......
Do we need to explain WHY teachers make so little?
Gosh, I don’t know HOW I do it!! (homeschool my kids)
You have no guarantee that teachers will succeed. But I guarantee you that if I fail so will our Republic. This country will not survive without an educated electorate. As Benjamin Franklin pointed out, we were given a democratic republic, the question is whether we can keep it.
If you are fool enough to value your trash collectors over your teachers then you don't deserve this country or your freedom, and you are guaranteed to lose both. You should hang your head in shame for what you have written. And so should others posting here.
You gripe about Liberal teachers corrupting your children and then you insult the rest of us as well. There are fewer and fewer Conservatives in education and fools like you wonder why.
I teach because I enjoy it, and because I'm good at it, and because what I do matters. I will be one of the last Conservative professors that many of our students see... ever. I would think that people on Free Republic would support the few like-minded people that are left in the universities. Instead you and others like you post garbage that any respectable person would be ashamed of.
As Jesus said, it is not what goes in a person's mouth that defiles them... it is what comes out of a person's mouth. I have skills that would pay me several times what I make as a teacher. If I did this job strictly for the pay I would be as big a damned fool as you and many other posters are.
It's not the worst pay I've ever made. When I was eighteen I picked up a rifle and went to the other side of the world for a whopping $99 a month. Ironically, when I returned home I got treated exactly the same way that I get treated as a teacher in some of these Free Republic threads. I have to deal with know nothing liberals at work every day. I have to make sure that my students know that there is a real world out there and not just the fantasy world created by liberals, slackers, and arrogant Hollywood elites.
Whether you like it or not, whether you have guts and intelligence to admit it or not, I'm standing between you and the whirlwind the same way I did when I was an eighteen year old soldier a long time ago.
Tomorrow, when the trash man comes, you should be sitting out on the curb with all the other garbage. I guarantee you'll end up where you belong.
Well, in my case, as an instructor, I had to set up networks and computers for the next mornings class. This was especially time consuming for the "service and support" course, where I had to set up specific problems for the class to find.
As for the teacher that I dated, well, she taught 6 classes a day with 20 to 28 children in each class... and she assigned homework at least 3 times a week. That works out to a lot of papers to grade.

What 8 hr. day? Where I live, school starts at 8:45 and ends a 3:15.
Those of you who think that teachers only work 185 days a year and 7 hours a day must have taken math in public school.
I never knew that teachers and garbage men had so much in common.
But this is not what this thread is about. To make a small connection I will say that there are both garbage men and teacher that exhibit Diva like qualities. Now back to Mariah Carey There are worst things to be than a Diva. If she dosen't throw a phone at her maid or get kicked off an international flight she will seldom make the news.
As soon as I saw the thread title, I thought of Mariah and her stiletto heels on the Stairmaster...what a photo (and mental image). I know the discussion has gone to important stuff...but bringing it back to MiMi...all I can say is she is what she is. DIVA!!! She can’t take it with her, so lets let he stimulate the economy whilst she can (those butterflies don’t come cheap).
“Those of you who think that teachers only work 185 days a year and 7 hours a day must have taken math in public school.”
Are you defending or slamming teachers here?
But remember this thread is about Mariah Carey. To make it work we must compare some teachers to Divas are maybe garbage collectors.
I don’t think Mariah Carey would make a good teacher or a garbage collector!
I think MiMi would be an excellent teacher...if nothing else she would keep the kids attention. She seems just ditzy not bitc#y :)
The country was not born with a public school system in place; lack of one will not cause it's demise. Teachers have less to do with creating an educated electorate every year.
If you are fool enough to value your trash collectors over your teachers then you don't deserve this country or your freedom, and you are guaranteed to lose both. You should hang your head in shame for what you have written. And so should others posting here.

I'm sure you're a great guy, but I would never trust you with my children. I wouldn't trust anyone I barely know with my children or their future. It's a personal choice, and I don't judge people who choose to put their kids in public school, but facts, as they say, is facts. The schools are failing.
I teach because I enjoy it, and because I'm good at it, and because what I do matters. I will be one of the last Conservative professors that many of our students see... ever. So you acknowledge that you're one of the few good teachers left, but you're upset with me for pointing out the vast horde of incompetents around you?
As Jesus said, it is not what goes in a person's mouth that defiles them... it is what comes out of a person's mouth. I have skills that would pay me several times what I make as a teacher. If I did this job strictly for the pay I would be as big a damned fool as you and many other posters are.
If you choose to make less than you can, that's none of my business. Just don't expect me or the rest of the public to make up the difference.

Thank you for your service.

I'm good, thanks. I have to educate the next generation, so I'll probably be inside with the kids.
I don’t have a problem with teachers’ hours of work or what they earn. Nor do I care what Mariah Carey or professional atheletes earn. I think is if some teachers are so unhappy with their work conditions, I suggest they become Mariah Carey or play professional sports. At the very least, they might look into a sanitation job.
Going in, people know what the pay and work conditions are and teaching is no nobler than any other job. If anyone is unhappy, they should change careers but quit the constant whining.
btw, I know some very excellent teachers who admirably dedicate themselves to their students. My hat is off to them. I also don’t hear them complaining.
I agree entirely. But how can Mom & Dad supplement Johnny's education when he's at school eight hours a day, and they both work so they can pay their taxes?

Mariah Carrey's pretty boring, as Divas go. As you say, she's going to have to start beaning bellhops with champagne bottles before she can hold my interest.
I don't know which is more appalling, your arrogance or your ignorance. It doesn't matter because the end result will still be the same.
