the blu-ray that I have seen in the stores is amazing. I might even consider investing in it if Hollywood was putting out any worthwhile films, but they aren’t. So, what’s the point, why should anyone care?

I guess I'm not very average. The most notable difference I can see is that the picture is wider, and slightly sharper.

I can hardly even stand to watch football unless it in HDTV. It would have to be a really important game. I see a worlds of difference in sharpness, color, detail, and the wider field of view.

You mean you don't want to see Micheal Moore and Al Gore preaching to you why America sucks and why people are gonna destroy the earth?

I respectively disagree. I’ve had HD for years, but it’s only right now that content is available in volume. I guess that well over half of all I watch now is in HD. It is a vast improvement over standard definition.

I was one of the lucky ones who got one of the $99 HD-DVDs from Walmart. It was serendipity as I was in the market for new DVD anyway.

You are correct in that most people do not have their HDTVs hooked up to a real HD source. But once you have it, you can’t go back to standard def.

HDTV is a quantum leap....

As evidenced by all the "insect" noise, such as what surrounds titles and people's heads, it's still a moving .jpg.

Now when it gets to the quality of .tif's and/or png's, then we can finally say HD has arrived.

IMHO, 99% of the people couldn’t spot the difference between a jpeg and a tiff image unless you pointed it out to them, and then would just think ‘so what’?

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players all upscale normal DVDs just fine.

Anything out there (or on the horizon) which plays both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray?

There are a couple of combo devices, yes, but if I remember correctly, they’re more expensive than most standalone HD-DVD/Blu-Ray players.

For what it’s worth, I would go with Blu-Ray in the form of the Playstation 3. Even if you never use it to play games, it’s still one of the cheapest Blu-Ray players on the market.

I probably won’t go for it, at least not now. But that’s good advice, I would also use the PS3 for that Folding@Home thing. Thanks.

They strike gold once in a while. Sin City and 300 come to mind. Batman Begins is good stuff, also.

I did exactly that last weekend. They finally came out with some PS3 games that I wanted to play, so I bought the $400 40GB PS3 + Spiderman 3 combo. Sony still has the 5 free Blu-ray movies by mail deal, so considering that Blu-ray movies average $25 each, I’ll have $150 worth of movies free.

Nice job.

I’d nab the $400 PS3, but it doesn’t have backwards compatibility.

Agreed. I have no cable/satellite. Bought a 25ft. pressurized 4x4, got a cheapo antenna with rotor. End result is 14 channels plus Canada. Been good enough for the garbage they broadcast these days. Febuary 2009 things will change when everything goes digital. But Uncle Sam has already said they’ll foot the cost for the upgrade.

I might even consider investing in it if Hollywood was putting out any worthwhile films, but they aren’t.

An important consideration.

The "best" movies; i.e pre-Blu Ray /HD, were not filmed digitally, and don't look that much better on BR than they would on upconverted DVD.

How badly do I want to see "Fast and Furious" or "National Treasure" on super hi res DVD?

Not very.

Digital technology has made it far easier to make, distribute and profit from poor content, music and video.
