Friday, November 9, 2007Matt Roush on Amazing Race 12
Question: I'm a huge fan of The Amazing Race and was disappointed last spring when CBS announced there would be only one installment this year. It seemed to me that Viva Laughlin was an obvious failure, and it lived up to that after one airing in Race's time slot. Now with the writers' strike going on, wasn't it incredibly stupid on CBS' part not to order the usual two installments? I know it's a completely different type of reality show, but I know they're prepping Big Brother for an early premiere, so it doesn't seem inconceivable to me that they could order up another edition of Race to premiere after this one ends in February. What are the chances of that? Call me greedy, but I love this show! Jess
Matt Roush: Well, Greedy, consider that it requires a heck of a lot more logistical planning to produce a season of The Amazing Race than it does to find a new batch of irritating idiots to lock inside the Big Brother house. The likelihood of them turning around a new race so quickly seems improbable, and I haven't heard anything to suggest this will happen, but given the recent turn of events, I suppose anything's possible. The reason The Amazing Race was pared down to one cycle this season had a lot to do with the fear of it being overexposed and diluted but given the strong numbers for its return last week, maybe that fear was premature.
CBS began advertising a casting call for the next Race even before this season premiered. I don't recall them doing that before. So it looks like there might be a TAR 13 in early 2008.
Yes it was funny to see them come upon something that does not respond to screaming and hissy fits.
The goths were better than I thought they would be. But come on. I thought gothism was out. Now it is like ho-hum.
The Obligatory Black Couple actually came out to be my favorite. They seemed to work well together.
One groan I had was once again I felt there was too much in and out of taxis scenes. That happened for a bit last season, too.
I am vexed tonight because at the same time as TAR is Extreme Home Makeover and they are featuring a family from Camden, New Jersey. I am interested in seeing them as they were also featured on 20/20 twice. A while back they were part of a segment on the lives of poor children in Camden and just the other night the follow-up showed this Marrero family receiving their new EHM home but stopped short of showing us the inside. I would like to see that. I just hope they are ok with it now and doing well. Many times those homes turn out to be trouble as it is difficult to move people from dilapitated conditions to a mansion of technology.

I am here...I half paid attention last week and don’t know all the groups yet
Surprised it started on time tonight, now I won’t have to wait to watch Dexter later tonight
We were all happy to see Ari & Staella go last week.
I hope the lesbian ministers are next :)
It is rare that it starts on time, especially in the middle of football season.
Traveling to the land of “Royale with cheese”.
The hippies and goths can’t wait to get to Amsterdam ... wonder why? ;)
I can’t help but gag every time the ministers talk, hope they go home this week
are they slow or what!
Nicolas and Donald are slow as molasses too.
Ron needs to switch to decaf.
Man...they sure got some goofballs for this race
