That’s the only thing I don’t like about the ARs(aside from the little holes in targets), is how dirty they get in the receiver from even light use. What’s worse is that the weapons don’t perform well when they are very dirty, so shooting them allot without cleaning is very much a downward spiral. Of course I feel that everyone should clean their guns after a good day of shooting, so the uncleanliness of the weapon shouldn’t be an issue if shooters give them the TLC that every gun should get.

I've had to learn what little I know about ARs in the past couple of years. We were issued A1s and A2s when I was active duty.
A couple of years back when we went "AR shopping", I went to a buddy of mine at the local shop over in town and he known we're a bunch of varmint hunters and "accuracy bigots". He sold me on the Armalite AR rifle because it said it was very accurate. He was right! I haven't been dissatisfied! We recently scoped one and it shot well, WELL under MOA at 150 yards! It's got a "creepy" trigger, but I might rectify that...at least on the one that I shoot. :-)
Another thing I liked about the Armalite ARs that we acquired is that they were HBAR and the extra mass in metal is supposed to help with heat dispersion and accuracy.
From somebody who has a fair amount of experience with bolt action rifles, and generally is not a semi-auto fan, I can say that I am satisfied with these Armalite ARs...at least in that they're accurate!

As DIRTY as they got from hard use on our little CQB course, they were very reliable. You sound a lot like us in that gun cleaning in our house has almost a "religious significance". :-)
Have you seen the AR-15 replacement uppers that have a closed gas system? It's a lot like the FN/FAL. One of my sons showed them to me, and I don't have it bookmarked. He does, but he's out of town for next couple of weeks. I'll try to find it though. I remember it being very expensive though. It was upwards of $1000.00 as I remember. For that price, one can just purchase an AR-180, which I know is a completely different "animal", but does have a closed gas system.
I guess I shouldn't complain about the AR. We shoot Mosin's too and all the 7.62x54R ammo that we purchase is corrosive, so timely cleaning is very important! Rust on firearms (especially through neglect!) is a CRIME! :-)

I have owned mine for at least 15 years. Nvere jammed. I was able to get a really cool 35 round plastic mag, plus some ten round mags.
I was burned on 20 round mags a few years ago.
Keep it simple IMHO...
Next thing you should get for laughs, a 303 enfield or a P1917 in 30.06
Happy shooting.........
