What Dell's desktop Linux move means

In 2004, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. In 2007, Dell, a top computer manufacturer, is introducing pre-installed Ubuntu Linux on its main PC lines. The worlds of baseball and the desktop will never be the same.
Dell also is saying something else that's equally important about the desktop world. It's saying, for the first time in more than a decade, that standard x86 PC users have a choice. For the first time since OS/2 mattered, users have a choice again. No more are users stuck with Windows. No more are they forced to pay the Microsoft tax.

linux is ok as a playthingy, but it will never catch on..... I have to agree. I've been playing with Ubuntu for a week now and at this point, my bottom line impression is that I have a discovered a new appreciatin for my WinXP Pro sitting on /dev/hda1.
Though, I will say that I am plugging along and will be loading and testing SimplyMepis 6.5.0.2 next week.
I will be using Linux when XP is no longer an option....many years from now.

Dell's move IS catered to the Linux enthusiast market. I think its a good idea to move slowly before expanding Linux to the mainstream. Linux today is easy to install but having it pre-installed on computers means people will be able to use it out of the box, with no additional configuration required.
