Yes, there were simultanous landings, JFK and LAX, East Coast and West Coast. Almost symbolic. Good they made it; I couldn't watch. :)
I'd pay money to watch that land at San Diego..
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa grabs the throttle of the first Airbus A380 passenger plane to visit LAX. The back-seat driver is Wally R. Mariani, senior executive vice president of Qantas Airways.
Allan McArtor, chairman of Airbus North America, conducts an upper-deck tour of the first A380 double-decker passenger jet to visit LAX. Steel containers of liquid simulate the weight of a loaded aircraft. For the inaugural flight, the lower deck was filled with instruments for monitoring the plane's performance.
Did you catch the landing at LAX on the video? There was a pretty big jolt on landing. The nose swung left, and the pilot had to correct abruptly. I can't imagine that was comfortable for the passengers.
It's odd to see something that big bounce around that much. It was not as bad as those classic Kai Tek airport videos, but pretty abrupt...
As you probably know by now the 380 arrived at LAX @ 9:30 am Pacific time this am. under overcast skies and very low wind conditions. It definitely is a jumbo. I could recognize it the moment it came into view, there was no doubt. It is big, very big.
Head on you notice the low position of the cockpit, kind of gives the plane a big forehead look. The most noticeable design aspect besides sheer size is the double level of windows for the full length of the airframe. Also the tail assembly is huge. ( And the tail assembly managed to stay attached during today's flight!)Everything about it is huge!
It really is a beautiful airplane and a sight to see. It was kind of anti climatic as the aircraft passed over quickly then traveled down to the far end of the runway.
Personally I doubt many of these will be built with Airburst's management and financial problems so if you get a chance to see this behemoth, take it. I think we are seeing the end of this type of aircraft, and the blended wing Boeing is thinking about would seem to be a logical next step in heavy aircraft.
As an aside, in reading this thread I see Los Angeles former gangmember (and former head of Los Angeles chapter of the ACLU) and so called Mayor was there to get his face on camera. This guy is the ultimate camera whore. And does nothing unless it will get him on the six o'clock news. Every single day god sends this guy is promoting himself in an obvious run for governor.
I have been trying to find out when the 380 is leaving, does anyone know? LAX departures are over the ocean in prevailing winds. This would offer a much better view and photo-op. I really would like to see it as it lifts off.
Regards.
Yep.
There was a SECOND A380 that I didn't catch onto, so your wait was not in vain!
Dose it have a open top model for site seeing?
Awesome .. 'cept for that cretin at the controls for his photo op.
That thing is humongous ... and I don't feature myself EVER flying on it .. LOL.
Thank you for your report.
Looking at the picture of the Airbus plane, I am suddenly thinking of the film CASINO ROYALE...(That just came out on DVD.) In the film, a terrorist tries to destroy a jumbo plane in Miami airport. Of course, 007 stops the terrorist.
Leaving Tuesday night around 7:30pm from 24 Left.
You are the man BK, thanks!
Regards.
RE: [SoCalScan] Airbus A380 at LAX - Take Off??
South runway - there is only one now, the other is under construction.
Best overlook is the overlook called Clutters Bluff in El Segundo at
Imperial Avenue and Sheldon Street. You can see the entire airport from
La Cienaga to Pershing. You can join the thousands of folks who will
descend there starting about 6:00 p.m.
Roads adjacent to the area will probably be closed to vehicular traffic
from California, Center, and Main Street along Imperial.
Just heard the departure has been moved up to 6pm....someone heard this on a police scanner.
Thanks, that will be better as it will be still light.
Regards.
I had to fly back to SAT out of LAX this morning -- you could see the tail of the Airbus as you exited 105 into LAX. Man, that was a big tail...
