Jennifer,
I am an acupuncturist and have dealt with this situation of severe, long term hiccups. Before you try surgery please contact an acupuncturist in your area and have him/her needle Stomach 9 on one side and Pericardium 6 on the other. You can also massage these 2 points for effective relief. You should be rid of them in 15-25 minutes. If you will post you email I can contact you and walk you through how to find these points for massage at home.

The only thing that ever works for me (and for others when I suggest it) is to take a deep (DEEP) breath and hold it in until my body forces me to breathe again...it is impossible to asphyxiate (sp?) oneself...but you are ultimately trying to do just that...when you finally let that air out the hiccups should have gone away. Hope it helps!

homeremides work for the hiccups,
recently i was watching untold stories of the ER on the TLC channel and one of the patients their had reoccurring hiccups and it was stopped by the push of the finger on the top of a persons eyebrow.
Folk
Anise seed (for infants) Pour a cupful of boiling water over a teaspoonful of anise seeds; steep; give the baby one or two teaspoonsful. It often cures immediately. Nursing the baby will frequently stop the hiccups, too.
Apple cider vinegar Slowly sip a glass of warm water mixed with one teaspoon of vinegar. Works better when the water is drunk from the far side of the glass.
Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) Mix two teaspoonsful of baking soda, two teaspoonsful of aromatic spirits of ammonia with four ounces of peppermint water. Dose: one tablespoonful; repeat if necessary.
Breathing Breathe into a small paper bag that is tightly pressed around your mouth. Or try spreading your arms out like a "T" and take a very deep breath. Repeat several times. Or try taking a deep breath and holding it as long as you can.
Chamomile Put 1 drop of chamomile essential oil in a brown paper bag; hold bag over nose and mouth; breathe in and out slowly and deeply through the nose.
Camphor Mix three drops of spirits of Camphor in half a glassful of water and drink.
Collar bones Put strong pressure on the collar bones.
Honey Take a teaspoon of honey.
Ice Eat or suck on a piece of ice.
Lemon Mix the juice of one lemon in half a glass of water; drink; repeat if the first drink didn't stop the hiccups.
Lemon/salt Put a teaspoonful of salt on half a lemon and then suck the juice out of the lemon.
Lemon/bitters Eat a slice of lemon which has been soaked in angostura bitters.
Orange Drink the juice from 1/2 an orange.
Peanut butter Eat 1 teaspoon of peanut butter.
Pepper, red Pour a half pint of boiling water over a quarter of a red pepper; steep; drink a wineglassful. If no red pepper is available, use five drops of tincture of Capsicum in a tablespoonful of water.
Pineapple juice Take a few rapid swallows of canned pineapple juice. Repeat hourly if necessary.
Sugar Cure hiccups by placing a teaspoon of sugar on the tongue and washing it down with a glass of cold water. Another sugar remedy suggests swallowing it dry.
Sugar/lemon Soak a cube of sugar in fresh lemon juice and let it dissolve in your mouth.
Tartar, cream of Add 1/3 teaspoon of cream of tartar to 8 oz. of warm water; drink 2 tablespoons at a time on an empty stomach.
Water Drinking water in various fashions has been an age-old cure. Here are several variations. Plug your ears and drink a glass of ice cold water; or slowly sip a cup of warm water; sip a cup of warm water with honey in it. For infants: hiccups usually disappear in 5-10 minutes. If hiccups do not disappear, give the baby a bottle of sugar water. Mix one-quarter teaspoon of sugar with four ounces of water.
Homeopathic
Cuprum metallicum 7: 5 granules immediately.

A friend of mine used to cure people's hiccups by suddenly asking them what their father's middle name was. People are surprised at the question and usually have to think for a second. They'll say, "It's Herbert. Why?" Then my friend would say, "Still got the hiccups?" and the person would realize, to their amazement, that the hiccups had gone away while they were distracted. My friend swore it worked every time. :-)

Honestly, I use this with my kids and my mother also used this same remedy on me. It really does work. What you do is fill a glass to the top with warm water. Put a hand towel or a washcloth over the top of the glass and chug the water. Drink as much as you can and as fast as you can. It should work, it has worked for me and my three girls. Hope it works!

Use acupressure to cure her hiccups. The point alongside the seventh thoracic vertebra near the bottom of your shoulder blades affects the diaphragm; pressing it can stop the spasms that cause hiccups. Have someone place their fingers on either side of the vertebra, about one finger's width away from the spine. Have them press firmly until the hiccups go away. It can take anywhere from 10 seconds to a few minutes. You can also try candied tangerine rinds. The essential oils stop the spasms. Or... she could try to get into the Guinness Book of World Records; but she would have to beat out Charles Osborne who hiccupped from 1922-1990 until his death, never having stopped!

Sneeze.
All she has to do is sneeze.
Also, not that you'll have to do this next suggestion cause the sneezing thing WILL work, but I've also had success with vinegar and sugar on a spoon.
My good friend, who happens to be a doctor, swears by the sneezing remedy.
Hope it works!

Yes, I took care of a patient in the ICU and we gave Thorazine to help with the hiccups and it worked.

I am Irish. "The Irish are immune to psychoanalysis" Sigmund Freud. I'm Irish too and I insist that Freud was full of bleep. The only way we differ from everyone else is that we sometimes develop Irish Alzheimer's...where you forget everything but the grudges. ;-)

I had to tell you...I read this on Friday, and today, my girlfriend got hiccups, so I decided to try it. As soon as I asked her her father's middle name, she did one more hiccup and stopped. Wow!

I suggest that she be put into a coma, then frozen until 3410.
Certainly there'll be a cure.
At least by then (02/21/3412) she'll have a normal life
without the WORLD trying to give her
enough salt to kill a,,
SALT WATER CROC!
