There has been this rumor around about this speech at NYU since he gave it. I am not sure what part you think is BS:
1. I certainly believe that Hardin and corrupt Stephens who we saw in action on this case recommending Nifong.
2. I suspect that Nifong in his interview with Easley said something like I don't have any plans to run for DA. Nifong was a caretaker type and the type to bow and scrape around the governor and try to seem humble. Of course it turns out he has a huge ego and once in the seat he likely quickly changed his tune. Professor Johnson's analysis of this is spot on.

Once Nifong fired Black and she decided to run, he had to beat her at all costs.
3. I certainly believe it is probably Easley's worst appointment? Nifong has been a disaster for NC.
The good part of this is that the Governor has signaled Nifong is hung out to dry. This is a sign that the Govenor considers damage from whites not voting Dim after this more worrisome for the Dims of NC than blacks not voting. Nifong must feel very alone this morning.
Easley is full of baloney. If he really believed this, he had ample opportunity to do something about it. Methinks his political advisors determined that Easley is taking a hit in this too and we are witnessing a lame effort at damage control.
So Nancy Grace is off the Nifong bandwangon?
She hasn't mentioned his name in months as far as I know.
I don't believe for one minute that Mike Easley would have appointed somebody he thought wasnt going to run without having a BACKUP candidate in mind; Easley just doesn't work that way.
Well hell's bells... Easley has no 'nads.
Says it to a bunch of strangers in NY and not to the citizens of NC or Durham????
Taken at his word, he appointed Nifong, who promised not to run.
Why would Easley extract a promise such as that?
Did he owe someone? Hardin? Stephens?
wow.....he's not very original in CYA, is he? Makes him look as stupid as the Fong! He appointed someone that he had no confidence in and then let himself get taken by the crook. What a sissy man!
Honk
Large numbers of them saying no more money and no more kids going to Duke until major changes are made.
It is interesting to comtemplate, isn't it?
I just cannot imagine him getting that promise without something in mind.
Was the Nifong appointment with a promise not to run a scheme to oust Freda Black? Who was Easley's candidate for DA? Somewhere the plan backfired.
She hasn't changed her spots at all. The bombthrowers like Nancy Grace have simply stopped talking about this. Every now and then one of the moonbats lets slip their belief that these guys are getting away with it, but they know that there is no credibility left to the original allegations-- simply sticking with the Nifong approach that if they wait long enough some piece of evidence will emerge that will substantitae a good faith belief that "something happened." Such evidence hasn't emerged yet, nor will it. In that case, they will curse Nifong's name and get back to business as usual.
I wonder if some of these talking heads who are used to saying anything about anyone at anytime with no risk of accountability are targets of civil lawsuits. That may be another reason for them to keep their yaps shut and hope for something to emerge.
I sse. You know him better than me, but I wonder if a governor cares that much who is DA is Durham.
I do think Easley is just a Dim governor trying to the bidding of the local Dim establishment so they would help him in any future state wide run, as a GOP govenor would have likely not cared and taken his cue from the local GOP establishment for the same reason. And I tried to imply on my prior quick post before running to get my car from the body shop, Nifong likely said he did not plan to run and Easley probably did not take that as a promise as much as he claims now. He probably thought that if Nifong did not run who would run next would be the decision of Harden, Stephens and the rest of the Durham court house gang.
Let me just add one more thing to this discussion for those that might not know. Easley technically could not unappoint Nifong. Possibly Easley could have pressured Nifong to resign once he announced, but now that we "know" Nifong he might well have hung on this this job like a bulldog.
I imagine he started caring sometime in April when things went south and all the papers had articles that said, Mike Nifong, appointed by Governor Easley..."
Granted, there wasn't anything he could do to REMOVE him, but he could have spoken up. And in this state.
That's what I'm wondering: if Nifong promised not to run, WHO was Easley's candidate? It just doesn't make sense he didn't have one; after all, as the question was asked up the thread, why would he extract that promise if he didn't have somebody in mind.
Did he already think Nifong was such a loser that he made him promise not to run?
Did he appoint Nifong so Freda Black wouldn't get it?
For all we know, Nifong promised to not run and to fire Freda.

Easley and Nifong- Revisionist History:
The answers to these questions can most
likely be found in the Rift in the Committee.
A fight over the Sheriff's office is also a fight
over the DA's office.
Consider this: there has never been a black
Sheriff or black DA in Durham County history.
Everything else is black now though.
