Snip~ from an article I've saved.

"I think of it as a high point in my career because of all my defeats and everything that had happened to me up to that point trying to win the Daytona 500. The track was so good to me in so many other ways, winning all those other races here. It's a great feeling winning the Daytona 500. You can write everything you want to write about it, but you're still not going to describe the way I felt. All the good feelings, all the pride, all the excitement."

And for one moment, Dale Earnhardt "the driver" and Dale Earnhardt "the old softy" were united as he idled his car past hundreds of well-wishers on pit road that day. Earnhardt "the driver" got a bit misty behind the wheel.

"That gives it that little extra touch, when all them crews and owners and everybody was out on that pit road congratulating me," Earnhardt said. "That was an exciting moment for me in my life. I'll remember that forever. We're racing against all these guys and competing, and to see them come out and congratulate me like that, well, that was pretty overwhelming."

A moment that will go down in history as one of the few times the competition was able to overwhelm the Intimidator.

The same day he died, 7 brave American servicemen went down in a helicopter. Anyone remember any of their names?

"He was Elvis and John Wayne and Steve McQueen and Christa McAuliffe all melded into one bad SOB."

In this series of things, one does not belong. Can you tell us which one does not belong?

"Dale wanted to have that penny for the rest of the race season but rules said he couldnt."

NASCAR "insists" that the winning Daytona car be placed directly into the Daytona museum for 1 year in the condition it came off the track. That did include the penny and the wonderful story behind it.

Actually, there were 6 that were killed in a collision of Black Hawk helicopters on a training mission the following day, Monday February 12th, in Hawaii. All were aboard the same helicopter. There were 11 others who were in the other helicopter that walked away or were injured in some capacity.

Those killed were...

Chief Warrant Officer George Perry (Pilot)
Chief Warrant Officer Greg Montgomery
Sgt. Thomas Barber
Spc. Bob MacDonald
Maj. Robert Olson
Spc. Rafael Olvera-Rodriguez.

May their souls rest in peace.
