Recall that "Boycott" entered the language because its first well-known victim was a man named Boycott, the guillotine was named after its inventor despite his objections, and Vidkun Quisling made his name synonymous with "traitor."

The verb "to Nifong" has come to mean, "to prosecute someone on criminal charges that one knows to be groundless, usually for personal political gain," and prosecutorial misconduct in general. Here is how it might be used in a sentence: "It is alleged that Mike Nifong Nifonged the Duke lacrosse players."

Other examples of usage:

"Massachusetts prosecutor Scott Harshbarger allegedly Nifonged the Amiraults."

"The Spanish Inquisition routinely Nifonged people as heretics so as to confiscate their property."

"Several people were hanged in Salem Massachusetts after being Nifonged on charges of witchcraft."

"Despite the lack of decorum at Saddam Hussein's hanging, he was not Nifonged because he was actually guilty of the charges against him (and worse). He himself executed numerous political opponents after Nifonging them."

"Libya sentenced several Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor to death after Nifonging them on false charges of infecting Libyan children with AIDS."

"Australian tourist Schapelle Corby was allegedly Nifonged by corrupt Indonesian police and customs officials."

"The infamous Dreyfus Affair in France was an example of Nifonging."

"Janet Reno's office allegedly Nifonged a decorated police officer on false child molestation charges when she was Dade County prosecutor."

By the way, Nifong got his face in the middle of the Wall Street Journal's opinion page today, where it will be seen by millions of well-educated and generally high-income people. Now that Dorothy Rabinowitz is after him, he is toast.

If Nifong doesn't do jail time for what he has done to our trust in the legal system, no one in North Carolina need pay any attention to the law again.
