Why is my computer slowing down?

What Norton Software did you install?

Norton Internet Security 2007. That slowed it down some. But it really slowed down after I downloaded the Security Pack 2 from Microsoft.

I actually reformatted my hard drive because of the issues but some Freepers said I needed the security updates. So I reinstalled everything and am back where I started.

Pretty sad when a company has to offer an additional app. in order to remove itself from your computer.

Have you tried to Clean and defrag your hard Drive?
Also you may want to get some software to clean out your registry. Tuneup or Tweak Reg. Then see how it goes.

A lot of left over files from updates and installations can slow down your computer quite a bit. Also, I wouldn't remove the Internet Security, it's benefit outweighs the speed issues.

On your advice, I installed and ran this when I had trouble with "SpyMarshal" on the first run it found 29 file items and 2 registry items, including SpyMarshal and SpySherrif all of which it quarantined.

Just a testimonial to the fact that it works and a thank you.

As you also noted to me, updating is important too.

Yes. I do that several times a week.

Symantec is a major resource eater-After I uninstalled NAV my system saw a nice speed increase. BTW it took me 6 months to delete every trace of NAV from my system. It clogs the registry with literally hundreds of registry entries and leaves untold numbers of files on your hard drive even after using the Symantec uninstaller.

Lou, is your computer running slow on everything, programs and such or just on internet connection? How many times have you reformatted in the last couple of weeks. With your recent XM Radio problem you said you reformatted. Now have you reformatted again? Have tried turning off the Norton's, anti virus and or Internet security? You can turn them off easily without uninstalling.
Nortons can slow things down but I have run it for years without any problems. Provide us with some more info.

Sometimes you might still have references to old programs that were deleted in your registry that might slow things down a bit as well although most suggestions here should be tried first. Even though there are registry cleaners, you can do a lot of damage if you are not sure what to do. I know myself, before I do any of that stuff, I make sure my "Go Back" programs is running. "Go Back" is a program that takes an image snapshot of your hard disc(s) from times to time and saves them. In case if you blow something up, you can go back to the last time you computer was running OK and restore it. It has worked for me like 98% of the time. Alternatly, you can make a backup of your computer on CD or DVD.

Norton was OK, a bit of a resource hog, I don't use it anymore some I went with Verizon DSL and I paid the extra $5 a month for the virus, spyware and other such protection so I use their software instead and it runs a bit smoother that way.

My system Im currently using now? A Pentium II, 266 MHz, 192 MD RAM, 200 Gig HD (partitioned into two parts), and I run Windows 2000. It was made in April of 1998.

Slow on everything, periodically. Even word processing. Plus, since I installed Office 2003 with updates, now my PC Study Bible program is periodically giving me error messages at startup.

How many times have you reformatted in the last couple of weeks.

Three. After I downloaded IE7 is when things really got slow. System restore wouldn't do what I needed it to so I reformatted. And XM radio was working. But then I downloaded Windows SP2 and suddenly XM radio wouldn't work.

So I surmised that the security pack was the culprit but the problem was that in Add/Remove Programs, SP2 had applications you could not remove.

So another reformat. Only this time I locked out the updates. But some Freepers said I really needed the updates, so I went ahead and updated, now I can't get XM again. Screw it.

Yes. I've tried everything. But I recently discovered that my other computer which is running the exact same OS, the exact same programs, will play XM radio. Just not this one. It's pretty bizarre.

I think maybe in a few months I might get a faster computer, a laptop. This thing is about four years old.
