Now, visitors are completely banned, Williams said.

In addition to limiting access, the university has expanded its contract with Safeway Patrol and Security, a Fayetteville company. Guards from Safeway will be on duty 24 hours a day, in three shifts of at least three officers, Williams said. The guards will run the checkpoint for at least a month, Williams said.

The guards are licensed to carry guns, tear gas and batons, said M. Johnson, who said he was in charge of Triangle operations for the company but would not give his first name.

Throughout the day, NCCU officers and Durham police also drive in and around the complex, Williams said. He said he has appointed a committee to study campus safety and report back by mid-March.

Standard Operating Procedure? Hardly! What's the deal here, Durham? Hiding something?

Did someone move the body to the stairwell? Did victim awaken, crawl down the stairs, collapse? We do not have parts of the evidence nor clues.

It's funny to me shots were heard around 8 & the police come out to investigate & find NOTHING. Then at 10 a maintenance worker finds her. In a pool of blood. OUTSIDE. Something about it is not right. If she crawled or moved herself in some way it seems there would have been a blood trail. And I haven't seen anything yet about how she was shot. If she died instantly then she couldn't have moved herself. And what about these strewn papers?

Yeah, "racist" is the ultimate condemnation. If someone doesn't believe in collectivism (communism), they are condemned as "racist" because those who benefit from Marxist systems are usually poor people, a group comprised in large part of ethnic minorities.

Brodhead needs to recuse himself, lol!

It's no surprise that Nifong is in hiding from the press. I wish somebody would report on his activities. Has he been showing up at the office? In court? The N&O should be following him around, at least during the week days.

Then why not kill Bennett instead? She's the one who did the interviews and got the statments first-hand.

We don't know if Denita had access to any of Bennett's notes or not, or if Bennett still even has her notes.

Or maybe a former GF of Denita's fiance who got dumped in favor of Denita. Black husbands are a rare commodity.

Then it wouldn't be a Duke lax case connection at the center. The Duke case would just be a coincidence - a vehicle by which the connection you suggest came to light through a series of unrelated events and situations.

If it was a hit for the reason you suggest, most likely the hitman would be a male, and it wouldn't happen in broad daylight. This really doesn't have the earmarks of a professional or semi-professional hit.

Remember Occam's Razor.

In the end, I think you'll find that this was personal.

Has the case been definitely linked to the female? She has already been interviewed, and nothing happened so I assume she has walked.

Nothing would surprise me in Durham. I'm not going to argue the point, but just the facts that stories are being pulled, the fiance's name is never mentioned, the neighborhood is locked down, everyone is mum, etc. raises the red flags.

"Then why not kill Bennett instead? She's the one who did the interviews and got the statments first-hand."

Maybe Smith had a conscience and was going to come forward with what she knew as a result of the Bennett interviews?

No, I got your point, I wasn't sure if my original reply was clear enough.

NCCU's Students Struggle with Smith's Death
WTVD By Ken Ward

(01/08/07 -- DURHAM) - It's a tragedy that is giving mass media students Bradley Davis and Britney Benson a first hand look at news, and how tough the job can be.

N.C. Central's campus is stunned by the shooting death of 25-year-old Denita Smith. Bradley Davis hopes to soon start his career as a news photographer and just came from a campus meeting discussing the tragedy.

Davis commented, "I think students needed to know about the situation and what's going on with the investigation so that people aren't just talking and spreading things that aren't true."

Britney Benson is hoping for life in front of the camera as a reporter.

Benson stated, "Its brought a mood of fear. A lot of people afraid not only to be at Campus Crossings but in the Durham area period."

One topic discussed is changes at Campus Crossings Apartments where Denita was killed. The university leased building, now has 24 hour security and guards now are asking for identification for anyone entering the complex. Despite the lack of an arrest so far students seem to understand even though the investigation so far has revealed little about why a promising graduate was gunned down, leaving an entire campus in shock.

Bradley stated, "As long as we know that the Durham Police Department is handling it and doing whatever they can to come to a resolution then I think we'll be ok.

I doubt it. Her fiance was just awarded some positioned title within the local NAACP. I would view Denita and her finace as being on the other team.

I don't know, Tommy, but I do know at this point we have nothing to connect this to the Duke case. Maybe information will come out to change that, but at this point there is no nexus to Duke unless you want to count the very peripheral circumstance that Denita worked on the NCCU campus paper with somebody who nine months ago interviewed some neighbors of Mangum's who didn't want to go on the record.

Just because the woman seen leaving the scene is out walking around now doesn't mean she will remain so. It is SOP for the cops to interview someone, get their story on record, then check that story out. If it pans out, they're in the clear. If not, they can plan on being re-interviewed.

I don't know if this woman shot Denita or not. She may have been an innocent witness who left quickly in fear of being spotted by the killer. She may have seen who fired or simply heard the shots and left quickly so the shooter wouldn't fear that she was a witness. We just don't have enough facts to make anything other than uninformed guesses. If this woman did the shooting, it doesn't sound like a professional hit by any stretch of the imagination, unless the media reports are all wrong, which we know they can be. Until we know more, we're spinning our wheels and grasping at shoehorns to fit this killing into the Duke case.
