When I can get away for 3 days at least and the weather is good, I'm going back.

I wonder if roofing felt would work.

Be careful when you go back down there or you could end up at the truck a whole lot faster than you intended. That happened to my sister. They have a pretty steep concrete drive and she was walking down to the the barn and both feet shot out from under her and she slid all the way down on her butt then crashed into the gate. It was kinda funny, but it could have hurt her bad.

I'm sorry you guys are having the cold temps and rain but I am really having a pity party here - 4 degrees thirty minutes ago. Bob has the horse shoer coming at 9:30 this morning, I couldn't convince him to call and cancel :(

I think roofing felt is a whole lot thinner and is more rigid. More like paper. I don't know if it would hold up as well. You could probably do about as well with a big piece of old carpet though. As long as you scraped down to a good solid base before you put it down and then put the 5-6 inches of gravel on top. But the only thing about old carpet is it's HEAVY. This stuff I can fold it up and put it where I want it. You do need to anchor the corners down to keep the wind from getting under it until you get some gravel on it though. A rock will do if it's not too windy, but a nail driven through it into the ground every 5 feet or so will do the trick too.

Be sure and take the camera so if you see the lights you can get pictures.

I think that qualifies for a

SH!T THAT'S COLD!

I sure do feel sorry for the farrier too. Hopefully you've got some kind of heater out there for him. When it's that cold, your fingers just don't want to work. And heaven help him if he whacks himself with the hammer. That hurts so BAD when it's cold.

I've been shaking my head all morning :) - it's not reasonable to stand out in weather like that and another couple of weeks won't hurt the horses. I decided this morning to look in the thrift stores for one of those big contractor's heaters for the barn.

Nope, no heater out there yet. I think they are both nuts and hopefully reconsider this whole thing.

Yeah, those big torpedo shaped propane heaters are really nice. They even have them at Wal-Mart. They'll keep you warm, but you can't hear yourself think while they're running.

I'll try to get to Walmart on my lunch hour today. We need something out there anyway, since Friday comes into the barn in just a couple of weeks. I don't see any evidence of a heat wave coming when she foals (at least not yet, but could happen).

Heat lamps hung overhead sound safer to me than those big jet engine type deals, but I'm a little phobic about that kind of stuff!

No horsie in a winter wonderland pics today, the horses seem to want to just hang out till this one passes :~)

Mares are inside :~)

You can see pony's breath, or it's that ghost that lives in that stall, one of the two :~)

Cats out for a few minutes, till they decided they wanted back in. :~)

Yeah, I don't know that I'd wanna leave one of those running unattended, but they're great for spot heating when you're working though. Seems like a friend of mine hung some of those tubular shaped quartz heaters overhead, parallel to the ground, in her wash room in the barn and said that they did real well.

Tiff leaves heat lamps on in her lean-to for the horses... I've always been a little leary of that, but I suppose it's safe enough in her circumstance, it is an outdoor metal building without a lot of flammables around.

I don't blame the horses for wanting to be inside. I would too! The cats look well prepared for the cold with all that hair.

I guess that would be ok, as long as nobody could reach them or the cords.
