Where in the article does it say 19 year old BOY. It says 19 year old partner. And in the States, a partner is commonly considered same sex.

You're an idiot...do a simple Google search.

My point is a 16-year-old girl shouldn't be pregnant. I hope you would not want to have your daughters at that age pregnant.

Don't be a jerk!

I'll follow up a bit by pointing out that Mary was quite probably somewhere between 14 and 17 when she found herself to be pregnant with you-know-who.

I don't know the situation that this young lady lives in, and neither do you. Perhaps it is a massive trauma, and perhaps it is not. Maybe her "betrothed" is an honorable man, and maybe he is not. None of those facts are in evidence here.

There are some for whom this fact set would be a horrible thing with a considerable moral problem and there are some jurisdictions where it would be a considerable legal problem as well. I for one, don't know any of that.

The only thing I know for sure about this story is that a young woman is having a baby, and I simply refuse to be sad or angry about that, without any other intervening facts.

So there. Neener. Neener. Neener. :-)

Life expectancy back then was 35.

I still think there's something wrong with 16-year-olds having babies...

And NO I don't preach abortion.

She has been with her boyfriend for 3 years, according to the interview I saw today. So, they're long-term. And yes, that means she was approximately 13 when they became an item.

Ok, you managed to call me an idiot, twice, and someone else a jerk once- all on the same thread.

Why should I do a google search when the article proves you are wrong. No where in the article does it say 19 year old boyfriend. Partner may be the generic term applied to unwed couples in NZ, but in the States, the term partner is used when refering to a same sex relationship.

Grow up.

Which reminds me, if she is Castle-Hughes, what if her "partner" were something like Rhys-Jones. Would the child then be stuck with 4 hyphens for a surname?

Jeremiah Castle-Hughes-Rhys-Jones, for example?

Life expectancy back then was 35.

That matters how? Incidentally... those sorts of figures only mean that many babies never tended to survive infancy. People that survived childhood tended to live just as long as people do now, more or less.

I still think there's something wrong with 16-year-olds having babies...

I wish they'd wait too. But given the choice between having the baby and killing it... well, I guess we know what you think.

And NO I don't preach abortion.

Suggestion: If you're going to tell young women they should keep the baby instead of killing it, DON'T HATE THEM FOR DOING IT. Just a thought.

Here is an example of how the American press treats the use of the term 'partner':
It was rumoured for a long time but lately is has become clear that the rumors are true: Sara and her her partner Allison Adler have a baby boy Source: Celebrity Baby Blog

Sara Gilbert is a lesbian. Allison is her partner. No where does it mention a boyfriend or turkey baster. THAT is how it is viewed in the States.

No, you are not right. Nowhere in the article does it say her partner is a boyfriend. If I have to google to find out that her partner is a boyfriend, then the article has failed. Again, it may be common overseas to refer to an unmarried couple generically as partners, but it isn't here in the States.
