Yes, there are snake-handlers in Indiana, and there are snake-handlers in Fairfax County, Virginia.

The big difference until very recently was that Fairfax had snake-handlers from India, not just Eastern Kentucky and Northern Alabama.

Traditionally there have been wholesalers who specialize in caring for the critters who then sell them to religious practitioners for short term use.

We had a wholesaler get bit by a black mamba years ago when I had just moved into Fairfax. He died even though they flew in antivenom to him.

There's a lot more of this stuff going on than people realize. The wholesalers and the practitioners try to keep it secret.

Ahh, man. I had the same idea and thought I had hope when I saw only 7 posts. Too late.

Officers confiscated five types of rattlesnakes, three types of cobras, along with gaboon vipers, copperheads, a puff adder, and two green mambas

He was too sick from the venom to be jailed, Really? I wonder why? What an idiot.

I saw the story on the late news. His neighbor says he'll have a difficult time sleeping tonight. He is worried about the ones the police didn't find.

'We had a wholesaler get bit by a black mamba years ago when I had just moved into Fairfax."
Is that the snake so poisonous that from its bite a man dies even before he is bitten?

I gather it's pretty poisonous, but the one you are thinking of is an Australian snake. All you can do is chop off the offending member.

You can try

http://manbir-online.com/htm2/snake.22.htm for more information on nasty snakes. This guy places the black mamba at #12.

I hate snakes but why are they taking them. You can't have snakes anymore?

Sgt. Dean Shadley, an Indiana Conservation Officer, said Fillenwarth did not have the proper permits to keep the snakes, which Shadley described as "extremely poisonous." He is charged with possession of a dangerous reptile without a permit.

Well, I heard that the thermal shock [like a photoflash powder fireball] does wonders in getting the snakes to recoil - the snakes are very heat-sensitive. Barring that - 12 gauge shotgun blast.

One of your problems with these very poisonous snakes is "blow back" if you scatter them with a shotgun.

Just a very minute quantity of that venom getting in your eyes or nose is going to kill you.

I don't think that's much of a problem with any of the snakes I know best ~ rattlesnakes and copperheads.

also some of the snakes were in poor health do to poor ill care. One of the snakes was a timber Rattler that is a protected species. If they are running low on Timber Rattlers They should look around Mount Baldy in southern Indiana.

Anybody from Indiana on the thread, snake handler religion is alive and well in various parts of the state. These guys moved in back in the 1950s.

You should also beware of black widows and brown recluse in the museum displays in the state capitol building. Although it's been a few years since anyone died, new management all the time forgets that the nasty spider critters just love the basement.
