Love dogs, hate Pit Bulls; they should be exterminated and their owners jailed for a minimum of ten years.

"Any who asks: "why do you need....."fill in the blank..,
is a socialist nanny stater who thinks their entitled to decide other's lives for them."
Please tell me where I suggested in my post that Pit Bulls out to be banned or regulated? I was asking why dogs without such a powerful bite are inadequate for their needs? It's a legitimate question.
"Pit bulls have a place, they are working dogs and when used as intended, in the cattle pens and horse stalls, etc, they are certainly justified."
Pit Bulls were bread to fight Bulls, for entertainment, similar to cockfighting. Their powerful jaws would clamp onto a Bulls nose and they would get bashed about until either they were forced to let go, or they brought the bull to his knees. I suppose if someone is a Bullfighting aficionado, owning a Pit Bull is justified, and who knows, perhaps there are other reasons.
I was simply asking, you are the one who jumped to the conclusion I wanted to regulate them. I was only trying to show Pit Bull owners how they appear to others. Frankly they look like thugs. I was just wondering why anyone would want to look like a thug.
PS read my about page. I am about as pro freedom anti goverment regulation as they come.

You missed my point entirely.
You asked: "Why do you feel the need to own a dog whose bite can crush and break bones?"
Anyone who puts themself in a position to judge what others "need" or "don't need" raises my anger greatly.
Who are you to decide what I "need" or "don't need"?
Why do you "need" a firearm? Why do you "need" a car capable of 200mph? Why do you "need" so much money? And on and on.
Now do you understand what is upsetting? People who question other's needs for this or that suppose themselves to be the judge of what others should have or not have.
It is true, you said nothing about regulation, but when you question another person's desire to own something, just because YOU won't own it, then the red flags go up.

Easy decision. Dog Bites...dog dies.
Any other decision by the owner is irresponsible and they should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

I think you missed the point.
When a 1,200 bull gets a hair up his butt and decides to tear down the barnyard in a mindless rampage, the only animals that I have seen subdue the creature were pit bulls.
Three of them, in about a minute or two of intense ruckus, and a clamp jaw bite to the nose, caused the rampage to end and the bull became manageable again.
The dogs do have a place. Its just not in the backyard with the kids.

Oh, I see. Pits are marvelous dogs as are most working dogs. If I had the resources I would get a Pitbull or a Presa Canario.

I rescued it from a pound. I know how to train dogs I did it for a living once. I know how to handle the breed and how to train it correctly. Rather than see it get put down because no one would adopt it I took Button in. Do I need a macho dog know I have also had a standard White poodle that I used to show for breed and obedience. Don't think for a minute that I am some kind of "Macho" guy who needs to prove himself to others. I'm not and I don't.

Yes Pure pit bulls are aggressive. If you don't know how to train and handle one you should not get one. Mixes generally are less aggressive. It depends on the mix. A mix with a boxer is asking for problems as Boxers are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.

I like Shepherds. and I never said it was the girls fault. It is more likely improper training on the part of the owners.

Isn't that last sentence an adaptation from H.G. Well's "War of the Worlds?"
"Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us."
Oh, I get it. Pit Bulls = Martians. Works for me.

So let me get this straight. The Pit Bull breeders and Pit Bull owners are at fault because some poor kid got mauled by a pit bull MIX. A MUTT. That make about as much sense as Gun control. Training an aggressive dog is Mandatory. It needs to go beyond basic obedience training and into Advanced Obedience training. Most people who own dogs don't even bother with basic. they can't afford the hour or two a day it takes to train them. It is the owners who should do research into the breed that suits them the best. The Internet is a wonderful tool and should be used when deciding what kind of animal companion you need.

Who are you to decide what I "need" or "don't need"?"
I was not putting myself in a position to judge what others need. The question was not "rhetorical". I honestly wanted to know why he needed a dog that can crush bones with his bite. Most people don't need a dog that can do that, unless they are Bull baiter's, so the question is legitimate. It is possible he does need a dog like that, but more likely, he enjoys the feeling of power it gives him.
Thats fine. Lots of people own sports cars that they can never drive as fast as they were designed to go. It's fine with me. I wasn't questioning his right to own a Pit Bull, I was questioning his reasons.
Unless people are Bull Baiter's, I think it's safe to assume Pit Bull owners want others to think they are dangerous thugs, or, come to think of it, they would be dangerous thugs if they were Bull Baiter's too, so.
Anyway, if thats what they want, they have succeeded.
Regardless of what you think, I wasn't questioning his right to own a Pit Bull, just his reasons, and like it or not, people are going to judge you by what you own and what you wear, and the way you conduct yourself, so chill out.

Most larger breeds would benefit from training. This weekend at the dog park, a GSD started snarling and snapping at my dog (a min pin, on good behavior). There were many other little dogs there which made it impossible for me to pick up my dog and get him out of harm's way.
Luckily, a pit bull was there, and responded to the dog's snarling with snarling of his own, and pushed his way through to the GSD.
No one got hurt - it was all showing of teeth, louid noises and circling, and I was able to get my dog out of the way.
The german shepherd's owner said 'oh he does that all the time' and was quite nonchalant. I had to walk away before I said or did anything that could have gotten me in trouble (like choking her with her dog's lead). The pit then went back to sleep under the bench where his owner was sitting.
I still love GSDs, and now am a bit more open-minded to pit bulls. Just goes to show you - clueless owners are everywhere.

Yep like taking a dog bred to fight and kill other dogs to a dog park. Great owner there.
Always makes a good soundbite when then owner admits "I had know idea..."
