Hi, everyone,
Well, the big day is finally here! Tonight will be the first time Ill be anchoring The CBS Evening News, and I am very excited and humbled. I really hope we can make this broadcast useful and meaningful for you. Thats really our goal, and were going to work hard to get there starting with tonights broadcast.
Five years after U.S. forces defeated the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Taliban are back. What is behind their resurgence? Our Chief Foreign Correspondent, Lara Logan, made her way into a Taliban stronghold in the Ghazni province in Afghanistan and had an unprecedented chance to meet and talk with Taliban leaders directly. Its an important story you wont want to miss.
To help put this report into perspective, there is no better thinker about the Middle East including Afghanistan than New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. I spoke with him about the challenges ahead.
Plus, there's much talk about the dwindling oil supply all over the world. Chevron today felt like it won the lottery when it announced that it struck oil in the Gulf of Mexico. The company says it may be biggest find in a generation. In tonight's Eye on Your Money, we will ask Anthony Mason what impact Chevron's announcement will have on the price you pay at the pump.
Also, Steve Hartman shares a very moving story about orphans in Nicaragua and some high school students here in the United States who have developed a unique bond with them. Im not giving away any more its a touching, well-told story.
In addition, the broadcast will include a new regular feature called "Free Speech," a segment of opinion and commentary from a wide range of Americans in their own, uncut words. Watch tonight for the first segment. You'll be able to share your comments with us on CBSNews.com.
On the heels of Ernesto, we're also tracking tropical storm Florence's path on CBSNews.com. Just click on the storm tracker for updated advisories, satellite maps and much more.
Also today we launched our blog, Couric & Co. Well be swapping stories, sharing opinions and, we hope, reading about your views. Please check it out and let us know what you think.
Thanks so much!
