"Assistant District Attorney Ashley Cannon" is handling the case for the prosecution.
She also handled the Evans' noise abatement prosecution.
(And I STILL want to know who the judge is.)

Tell me something ... why would the Hecht's security guard call Elmo for Hawkin's name and number if he thought Elmo was an accessory to the shoplifting crime? Makes no sense.

Very true.
I haven't met one yet that doesn't want to be a COP. The DPD has offices in the basements of more than one Durham mall. Gottlieb has a personal office in one of those malls.
How much would it take to lead the guard on? Not much, I suspect.

Defense lawyers in the lacrosse rape case have said that Elmostafa was charged because he is a favorable witness to the defense. Loflin put one of the lacrosse investigators on the witness stand this morning and produced typed notes from the lacrosse case that show District Attorney Mike Nifong wanted to be informed when Elmostafa was arrested. Oh Happy Day!

I'm sure they interviewed Hawkins and made a deterimination whether she could tell the same story twice. She was looking at cross examination here.
With her background, no one should be surprised that they apparently didn't think she'd make a good witness.
