Let's think about this one. From my perspective, umbrellas in Hong Kong do not make rain in Spain. We are looking at it as if we were aliens looking down from the Mother Ship. Those on Tera Ferma may be planting more dudicious trees to save the planet. Lots of Autumn leaves to grace the landscape. If it is a die off of vegetation, do any of these Mother Ship cadets name the vegetation that is dying?

Oil is pumped out of the ground, which which obviously reduces pressure in the subterranean strata, which obviously causes shifting of earth along fault lines, which obviously causes earthquakes, which should they happen under water, obviously causes tsunamis, which obviously causes destruction, disaster, disease, and several other serious detrimental effects on the ecology, such as rising gas prices, McDonald's, the IRS, and hangnails.
